SHN files changing to BAK files???!!!.....

No, you are *never* supposed to convert them to smaller file
what about win rar I have dl files from news groups in rar format w/ shns inside I always assumed these had not lost quality. Any thoughts?

couple of things...
ok, so i've been trading since '95 and here is what is generally and widely accepted:
01. if you have a copy of a show in SHN format on your PC you can either store it on discs (as some people do) or convert it to a WAV file (lossless) using a program like MkWact or Shorten and then burn that show to disc, etc.
02. unless for PERSONAL USE ONLY (i.e. you're just playing them on your pc), do not convert shows to mp3. every info file that comes with a show has this disclaimer. mp3 is a lossy format and should NEVER be used for trading.
03. if you are setting up a trade in SHN format, you should verify that your md5's valid and then burn the show in SHN format to trade. if you are setting up a trade in AUD (audio) format, you will want to convert the SHN's to WAV or if you have the show in AUD format, you will want to use EAC to extract the WAV files and then burn the discs. this is way it should be done so its an Exact Audio Copy (EAC).
04. you should ALWAYS burn DAO (disc at once). this is an option in most burning programs - never burn TAO (track at once) as it adds two seconds of blank space to every track.
i hope this answers a part of what you were looking for. just be sure to NEVER trade mp3's.

this won't affect the SHN's - its just a way to archive files.

In order to start a collection of DMB shows you must acquire that all important first show. This is done through the process of a b&p whereby you send blank media and postage to someone and they make a copy and send it back to you. Finding someone to perform this service is easy. Get in on a public b&p that you see offered on the boards or make a post stating that you are new and need someone to do this for you. You can ask for a specific show but you may have better luck making a general inquiry and chosing a show off the list of the person who is doing your b&p. If you are totally clueless you can ask your b&per for a show that he/she thinks you will like or will serve as a good trading tool for you. If you are most ambitious you may peruse the lists that are made available to you of board members and contact them individually. In any case, someone will certainly oblige and should tell you the specific steps you need to follow that are in accordance with his/her methods.
You are now in possession of at least one show and are able to trade. Below is a list of rules that are universal and inherent in the clause of any transaction. If anyone breaks these rules or solicits a transaction whereby any of these rules would be broken, refuse the deal and report the actions if you think it necessary. Any additional rules should be considered personal and should be conveyed specifically to the person whom you are dealing with.
1. Do not send money for shows. This allows for a profit to be made which is never acceptable in trading.
2. Never send more than is being sent to you in return. This, again, is to prevent a profit of any form from being made. The only exception is if your b&per stipulates that you send an extra blank in case one gets damaged in the process of copying; in which case it will be sent back to you if it is not needed.
3. Make sure that the package you are sending is adequately padded to prevent any damage during travel.
4. Make known any flaws in your shows including skips, jumps, cut songs, incorrect or ambiguous dates or poor quality.
5. Agree to a send date on which the package(s) will be sent. Try to adhere to this agreement as much as you can. If for some reason you didn't send, let the other person know why and when you will be able to.
6. Don't trade any MP3 sourced shows.
7. Only trade DAO shows (meaning that all tracks have a smooth transition).
Here are some additional good trader tips and established amenities:
1. Wait at least two weeks after a show before ISOing it. It is rude and disrespectful to the taper to request it any sooner.
2. When expecting a b&p it is okay to contact him/her politely to check on the status.
3. After you recieve a package from someone, especially a B&P, contact them letting them know that you recieved it and that it is appreciated.
4. Wait a reasonable amount of time before exposing alleged bad traders. This time is highly variable and is dependant on how communicative he/she is, what sort of reasons are given for the delay, if any, and the general feeling you get from this person. Don't jump the gun because any accusations can be permanently damaging to one's repuation as a trader. However, once you are reasonably sure, do report the bad trader to prevent others from getting screwed.
5. If you sign up or get approved for a B&P, send the stuff or if you change your mind let the person know. No one likes to be held in the balance.
6. Do as many B&Ps as you can.

, can anyone explain what the *.bak files are and what they are used for?
If anyone is familiar with the mkw Audio Compression program, could you explain the "file options" dialog box and how it's used...I'm particularly interested in the area that mentions the .bak files.
It sounds like if you are not careful (i.e. me not knowing what the hell to do), you can destroy the shn files (convert to .bak)...and loose the shows that took me FOREVER to dl on my dial-up modem.

OK, bak files. They are created when the files already exist. So say you take some SHN's and convert them to wav. Then you take the SHN's and convert them to wav again. You will get bak files and the wav's.

If you want to get your shn's off your hard drive just burn them as data cd's with Nero or Roxio (which I generally consider Nero as the better of the two). Usually takes 2 discs.
