LIVE TRAX VOL. 17: 7.6.97 SHORELINE AMPHITHEATRE MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA NOW AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER
Dave Matthews Band's Live Trax Volume 17 is now available for Pre-Order. For the 17th release in the DMB Live Trax series, we chose the Shoreline show from 1997 which is also the first release from that year. This was the band's first headlining performance at Shoreline Amphitheatre.
Highlights of the summer 97 Shoreline show include the debut release of Leave Me Praying (which later evolves into Don't Drink the Water) and the cover of Daniel Lanois' For The Beauty of Wynona featuring Los Lobos' Steve Berlin on sax and David Hidalgo on electric guitar. Jimi Thing features remarkable horn play by LeRoi and Steve Berlin in a musical conversation with Carter's drums. Hidalgo's guitar solo in Lie In Our Graves is also worth mention, lending a special sweetness to the song.
We are also offering a couple of bundles with the Live Trax Vol. 17 Pre-Order:
• Live Trax volume 17 with 100% ringspun cotton unisex tee in Smoke featuring a graphic designed to commemorate the 1997 Shoreline show. Available in sizes S-3XL.
• Live Trax volume 17 with volumes 10-16 for a Special Pre-Order Only Price.

After releasing its first live show nearly thirteen years ago in an effort to undercut the rampant bootlegging industry, Dave Matthews Band's management today announced the milestone fiftieth full release. The July 6, 1997, show, from the band's first headlining performance at Shoreline Amphitheatre, will be released as Live Trax Vol. 17 on May 4, 2010.
Several aspects of this show make it a noteworthy choice. Perhaps the most obvious is that it is the first release of a show from 1997 (the 6.16.97 show was reportedly considered for release many years ago but was eventually scrapped). The 1997 Summer Tour had two distinct phases. The first half of the tour featured Béla Fleck and the Flecktones as the opener, while Fleck and others sat in and highlighted those shows; the second half featured Los Lobos as the opening act, and members of the band sat in highlighting those shows. This show is from latter phase of the tour and features contributions from guitarist David Hidalgo and saxophonist Steve Berlin. Management has given several recent hints that a 1997 release was possible: they released the Typical Situation from 7.5.97 and have included the Say Goodbye from the same night on the most recent Warehouse 5/8 compilation.
Another notable characteristic of this show is that it will be the first release of Don't Drink the Water's predecessor, Leave Me Praying. Some people had suspected that this ubiquitous-in-1997 song was somehow the reason for the band's seeming refusal to release a show from 1997; however, if that was true, the band and/or their management have obviously overcome any apprehension they once felt about releasing the song (granted this is all wild speculation, but if that sounds too far-fetched, note that an early version of #41 has yet to be released while several shows and other single songs from Spring/Summer 1995 have been released and all have managed to dodge that song).
Live Trax 17 will also be the first release of the Daniel Lanois cover For the Beauty of Wynona, joining The Maker and Still Water to complete the trifecta of officially-released Lanois cover songs. It is worth noting that Leave Me Praying and For the Beauty of Wynona were songs #2 and #3 on the list of those played the most without an official release. In order to knock two more off the list that have been played more than 10 times in one release, they would need to release a Dave and Tim 1999 show and hit If I Had a Boat and Wild Horses (find out which shows here).
From the band's website:
For the 17th release in the DMB Live Trax series, we chose the Shoreline show from 1997 which is also the first release from that year. This was the band’s third performance at Shoreline Amphitheatre, opened south of San Francisco in 1986 in cooperation with promoter Bill Graham who designed the venue space to resemble the Grateful Dead’s Steal Your Face image.
Highlights of the summer 97 Shoreline show include the debut release of Leave Me Praying (which later evolves into Don’t Drink the Water) and the cover of Daniel Lanois’ For The Beauty of Wynona featuring Los Lobos’ Steve Berlin on sax and David Hidalgo on electric guitar. Jimi Thing features remarkable horn play by LeRoi and Steve Berlin in a musical conversation with Carter’s drums. Hidalgo’s guitar solo in Lie In Our Graves is also worth mention, lending a special sweetness to the song.
We encourage you to show the band that you support their releasing significant shows such as this by purchasing the album. The pre-order ends on April 30.

I'm not a fan of the pre-'98 DMB, so I've gotta ask: Is this just a random show pick from that tour (like they did with LT 16), or is this specifically a great show?

Its specifically a great show; '97 was a very good tour. I'm glad For The Beauty Of Wynona is finally getting a release.

Listened to this last night. Great release. Good sound, the band's playing is tight, great songs, just an all around good show.
