Explaining Carter
Everyone keeps saying that Carter makes DMB happen. And that should Carter leave dmb would be finished.
I don't know much about drums or drumming (or anything for that matter). So can someone explain to me how is Carter different from any other drummer in the music world?
Cheers.

Re: Explaining Carter
in my humble opinion, carter, dave and stefan would be hard, if not impossible to replace. They hold the groove to every song, and boyd and leroi would do the filling. Their songs wouldn't be their songs without carter holding the time. Another drummer could try to imulate it, but he knows every strum of Dave's rhythm and emphasizes what Dave is pounding out on the guitar.

Re: Explaining Carter
Well, they've been playing together for almost 20 years...I´m talking about something more technical (sp?).pacific34 wrote:in my humble opinion, carter, dave and stefan would be hard, if not impossible to replace. Re: Explaining Carter
I don't think it's a technical thing as to why he'd be hard to replace. I don't think it's b/c he can hit the cowbell better than most. It's not like they couldn't find another drummer with tons of talent. He is the core of their songs though, and I think their sound would be dramatically altered if he was gone. Where as they are having Coffin fill in right now and it still feels like DMB. Again just my opinion.

I think he's pretty close to irreplaceable. Not quite, but it definitely wouldn't be easy finding another Stefan.

Re: Explaining Carter
This'll be interpreted as one bass player sucking off another, but I think Stefan is easily the most underrated member of the band. In my opinion, his bass lines are a near-perfect balance of rhythm and melody. They're rarely flashy, like Boyd's violin solos, or as tricky as something like Dave's part in Tripping Billies, but they don't need to be. He's such a versatile player that can alternate between just plucking the roots or adding entire melodic elements to the song. Take his part in Satellite, the verse has a very simplistic bassline, but the chorus is much more melodic and really drives the song. Stefan acts as the balance between the rhythm of Dave's guitar and Carter's drums and the melodies of LeRoi and Boyd.fedelm wrote:Explain.GSR wrote:Disagreed.checkii wrote:god no.pacific34 wrote:in my humble opinion, carter, dave and stefan would be hard, if not impossible to replace. Additionally, though obviously not lately, he has great song writing potential, as evidenced by his songwriting credits on BTCS. The Dreaming Tree wouldn't be The Dreaming Tree without that hypnotic bassline. It can be understandably difficult for a non-bassist to overlook Stefan's parts because the bass is traditionally a background, as opposed to lead, instrument. But, I think that upon further inspection his lines are much more valuable than they initially appear to be. I can't think of very many bass players that would be able to replicate what Stefan does. They could cover it, and obviously someone like Wooten would have no trouble taking over the bass chair, but then the basslines would sound like Victor Wooten, not Stefan Lessard. That's what I meant by irreplaceable.

Re: Explaining Carter
Carter Beauford is one of the most "melodic" drummers around, he doesn't just keep time, he adds to the overall feel of the music, maybe even the lyrics, i think that right after Dave, he makes DMB. Very hard to explain but w/e, listen to Grey Street.

Re: Explaining Carter
I'd have to look at the liner notes to be sure, but Wikipedia gives him co-writing credits for Too Much (all members), Rapunzel, The Last Stop, Stay, The Dreaming Tree, and Pig (all members).
