A Look Back at 2004
It seems like I've been making the same comments over and over about 2004 lately, but I posted this on other boards and I figure I might as well post it here as well
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've been listening to the summer '04 songs a lot this past week and I just can't help wondering why in the world they scrapped them for Stand Up. Do they realize how badly they messed up?
Dave seemed really motivated to do something great with the band again after his time writing Some Devil and touring with D&F and he came through big time, with what I believe are his best group of songs since 2000. They seemed on the verge of making another great album. Certaintly not another BTCS, but I think with those songs at the core and a solid producer or even just themselves at the helm, they could have easily made something to rival UTTAD, Crash and Busted Stuff.
Crazy/Easy - Its such a mellow and jazzy tune. It reminds me a lot of both Busted Stuff and Captain actually. Dave's guitar part, Carter driving the song, Leroi's solo. I love how it evolved over the tour. And I'm still pissed to this day that they didn't play it at GGP, I want an SBD of this badly.
Sugar Will - It contains, what I consider to be, one of the best guitar parts Dave has ever written. It is so unique. I really think that you could go another 1,000 years and nobody else would be able to come up with that part. Dave's vocal melodies really added a lot as well. Stefan's fills are incredible, just listen to the 9.3 version, he adds so much. By the end of the tour it was a monster with Leroi and Butch playing off each other during the outro.
Hello Again - Again another great guitar part by Dave. The song is just pure power, and once they added the Carter solo and then Leroi playing over the band with the baritone sax this song blew my mind. I really wish this didn't make Stand Up. It deserved to be on a stronger album, with songs that fit better with it. It seems so out of place on Stand Up.
Joyride - A fun song that could have easily been made into a single since it is the most radio friendly out of the group. Plus it could have gotten Dave's anger with the government out there in the form of better song than American Baby.
When I listen to these songs and compare them to the new songs this tour it really is no contest for me. I like most of the '06 songs, but the '04 songs have so much more depth and they truely did evolve into complex pieces over the course of the tour. Just listen to the first Sugar Will or Hello Again and then compare it to a later version. The difference is pretty amazing. Imagine if they had stuck to the original plan, and with Dave's head in the space it was in when he wrote these tunes, went back into the studio without Batson and wrote 5 or 6 more of equal quality (we know he wrote at least one more during the spring '04 studio session that they didn't play on tour). Imagine how much different everything would be. Complaints about setlists would be nowhere near what they are today and the band would have been right back or at least very close to where they left off before they got derailed by Everyday.
I'm sorry to dwell on the past, but damn, they really screwed up here. I honestly never thought that after what happened in 2000 that they would dangle new songs in our face for a full summer tour and then go off and scrap them for something of lesser quality. At least with the LWS they had a legimitate problem and they needed something new, but what happened in '04 I still don't understand to this day.

i actually had the same thought today. like has been said the '04 songs were much deeper and were really really solid tunes. the new songs are good but are different than those 04 songs
Good Good Time
Crazy-Easy
Sugar Will
Joy Ride
Hello Again
Shotgun
Break Free
Kill the King
Idea of You
you put those 9 on an album and do them their justice and you are looking at a really solid album or at least the core of an album. granted they may not go together all that great but are all solid tunes, better than a majority of stand up

That would be a pretty badass album. Maybe even toss Loving Wings on as a hidden outro.wkpggrvn2001 wrote:i actually had the same thought today. like has been said the '04 songs were much deeper and were really really solid tunes. the new songs are good but are different than those 04 songs

Nah I haven't. I meant to get that whole show, but my campus' firewall would make it take 2 months to torrent it.Nitro1515 wrote:Have you heard the version from Gorge N3 this year, it comes close to thatGSR wrote:There is only one version of Loving Wings. And that is the gorge night 2, 2002.
