Lilywhite Sessions vs Busted Stuff

Unread post by NonSequitur » Thu Apr 20, 2006 5:59 am

Hello.

Having recently downloaded the remastered Lilywhite Sessions, and already owning a copy of Busted Stuff, I was intrigued as to what you all recognised as the differnces between the two albums. Song by song, what do you notice as being different (I don't mean the tracklist obviously!)

Ta You.

You know what there are alot of people on here who are alot more obserevant than i am, but i realy dont notice a huge difference, i mean not a one that makes me think one is far superior. Apart from Captin on LWS is better.

yeah i still pretty much agree with that post i wrote in a thread like this a while back - although i really like captain on lillywhite now - i still like busted stuff better as an album because of its quality, but i wish JTR and SUAD were on it

First of all the one major difference I notice between the two albums is that Dave's voice changed a lot over that 2 year span, to me his voice is perfect in 2000 and a little bit worn out in 2002. Now as for the differences between each version of songs and which ones I prefer...

Busted Stuff - Dave's vocal delivery is a little bit more wicked or even sarcastic on LWS and I love that, however LeRoi is money on the outro on the BS version, if you could combine the two the song would be perfect

Grey Street - I love the LWS version, eventhough the lyrics are a little rough it just has a better sound to me. BS version is still good though

Diggin' a Ditch - This is the one track that is a toss up for me, they both sound good. I guess I like the LWS version a little bit better because Dave sounds more depressed and the few notes that LeRoi plays at the end through the static is cool.

Big Eyed Fish - I like the lyrics in their original order on LWS, the song seems to make more sense that way. BS version is good but I just love the LWS version

Grace is Gone - No comparison. The LWS version is beautiful and the outro jam is very depressing unlike its upbeat counterpart on BS which doesnt seem to match the lyrics

Captain - Again no comparison. The LWS version is one of the bands greatest studio recordings, they butchered the song lyrically on BS.

Bartender - I like both but there is no topping LeRoi's work on the outro on the LWS. It is my favorite work of him in the studio

Kit Kat Jam - This is the one thing I like better on BS just because its cool to hear an instrumental for a change.

Raven - Both are excellent. I love the improvised lyrics on the LWS and I love the set lyrics on BS. Too hard to pick a favorite.

A lot of the lyrics are different in LWS than in Busted Stuff. I think the ultimate album would have been busted stuff lyrics to LWS mixes.

I am not a fan of the LWS, they sound unfinished (they were unfinished) and the band is capable of more, as evidenced by busted stuff. Although I love the 4 chorus grey streets, the grey street on Busted Stuff is infinatley tighter and better performed on so many levels. Roi, Stefan, and dave's vocal delivery are all spot on and perfect. probably one of my top five studio takes ever. Busted stuff also has YNK on it...what more can you ask for, one of the best songs the band has ever put together IMO. Grace is Gone on the lillywhites is too slow and dreary, on busted stuff it sounds tighter and more like it was intended to be, still sad but has the feel to make it appear as if there is hope for him. the LWS just sound so empty to me. and raven, ugh, it's torturous. hearing dave moan through 5 minutes of that is pretty bad. the busted stuff version is once again infinatley tighter, and although I did like that they kept the jam going in LWS, i'd take the trade of no jam for a tighter, faster, better sounding raven, lyrics included.

i also love the outro of the LWS bartender, but the non-outro part of the song is once again dragging and weak. i just love the way busted stuff sounds. so much fuller, and like a real album.

build you a house, on the other hand, is awesome.

I like the LWS because they're imperfect, dark and very moody versions of great songs. And I also favor the LWS because Dave admitted he was depressed and drinking too much and it was evident in the music then later they put those tunes on the shelf and ED "revived" the band and then they pepped up/polished the tracks and released BS.

LWS for me, more off the record sound from the band over all, its not like any of the other studio albums which all have a similar feel to them. I like how Dave mixes up the vocals in most of the songs too.

Gee thanks Jellyfish, for encouraging relatively new people to contribute to the boards, which are essentially the same couple of hundred or so conversations about DMB repeated over and over again anyway... I already have my opinion, I was interested in others'... Hence the post. If all we did was read old posts, the boards would slowly dry up, wouldn't they?

lws.........because it is a forbiden album, i think people get carried away. i have heard people say they think it is their best album, BTCS and UTTAD i think are.
i prefer the new versions but they arnt revolutionry. busted stuff has some great songs anfd some adverage songs. same with lillywhites. i just wish it was fully finished.
PS, i cant wait for the new album, i think its gona be a crash style album. not to obscure, not to poppy
