MEETING DAVE MATTHEWS

Unread post by dagoba6@aol.com » Mon Nov 11, 2002 4:40 pm

I am in the middle of trying to get back stage passes to meet Dave during his winter tour. I was wondering if anyone out there has meet Dave Matthews and if so what kind of guy is he. Also does anyone know what religious beliefs he has. Just wondering, because he mentions Jesus and God in a couple of his songs. He even wrote a song about Jesus’ birth and death (Christmas Song).

Oh no, the religious can of worms. ;)

There have been numerous, lengthy, and quite contentious threads on this topic at DMB boards all over the net. The bottom line is, no one really knows for sure, but the smart money is on Dave being agnostic.

if we're following that line of thought, not even Dave would know, would he?

Well good lord man, I guess if you want to read that statement as narrowly as possible then yes.

What was clearly inferred is that Dave is the one who truly knows, and he's not on here to ask, is he?

So we can't know for sure.

I think the book "Step Into the Light" mentioned he was raised as a Quaker. I'm not sure what their specific beliefs are or if he is still practicing but I do know it is some kind of faction of Christianity. There never seems to be any shortage in number of Christian factions...

I think you're right about the quaker thing, but i'd bet he leans toward being Agnostic which i think is sweet because you kinda believe and take a little spirit from each religion. That in my book is better than a religious war any day. Just my opinion though nothing evil intended toward anyone.

What about this......

If Dave is Agnostic, then why would he say that Evelution is irrefutable as he did on 2.6.99 when talking about ants that protect some tree in South America?

evolution

Unread post by gravedigger » Tue Nov 12, 2002 5:50 pm

yeah, he said the evolution is kinda irrefutable, and he talks about that tree in the Amazon that gives out that milk that feeds the ants and then the ants kill anything else that comes on to the tree. That really doesn't say that he does or doesn't believe in evolution but it does imply that he might......I dunno what I'm talkin about, so I'll stop here. :?

An agnostic would not be able to prove or disprove Evolution or the existance of God.

well, then everyone is an agnostic because nobody can prove or disprove neither evolution nor God.

Fella's agnostics aren't trying to prove anything they agree with a peace of every religion that's the whole point.

Oh yeah the ants thing i think he was using that as an example of the evolution or growth through out life. I mean that song isn't about a milk leaking tree and ants. It was a metaphor leading into a song about the redundancy of life. Again just my opinion.

Believing in evolution does not necessarily have anything to do with religious belief. The theory of evolution says nothing about the origin of life, merely the adaption of species.

Not exactly. While the term agnostic has a definition that varies from person to person, it is usually defined as someone who does not believe that the existence of God can be proven or disproven. I'm not sure what you'd call someone who believes a little piece of every religion. A particular agnostic might in fact believe that, but it is not at all the definition of being one.
