What Would It Take From DMB?
Over the past 6 months (pretty much since SU came out) I've seen some of the regulars on this board pop into this side of the boards saying that they barely listen to DMB anymore. So my question is, what will it take from DMB to get you back into them? Will one good studio album do it? Will you need to see a steady run of solid studio work to get you back to the kind of fan you used to be? Or has the time just come for you to move on to other bands, no matter what DMB produces in the coming years.

A concert in my backyard with naked women as stagehands.
4 albums worth of material produced by Steve Lilywhite delivered to my door by a naked Jenny McCarthy spanking Chosta with a paddle.
A US tour where they bring back old and forgotten songs, instead of limiting themselves to a 30 song catalogue.

I personally think I will always have time to listen to DMB. They are in all of my playlists and I always have a CD or two of them in my car. Of course, I listen to quite a few other artists and they get their time too, but Ive listen to DMB so much that it is impossible for me to say "Well, Im just going to stop listening to them so much, I have other things to listen to". And I never really want to get to the point either. I have no probalem with DMB right now so for the points made by Gianni, they do not apply to me.

I will always listen to DMB...just not as much as I used to. I have since realized that there is too much good music out there to devote so much time to DMB. I took a while off because it was all I listened to for so long...but I still listen to them.
So yeah...as much as I'm not as big into DMB as I used to...I will always listen to them.

I think I will always be a casual listener of DMB. Even if they manage to come out with a great album(s) I will never be a huge fan like I was.
I think I was lucky with respect to my age / time period in my life when I started listening to DMB. Im glad I got to see them multiple times in the mid to late 90's, as I feel those were the best years of the band. For me, there is nothing to look forward to anymore with respect to the band's creativity, and if they broke up today, I really wouldn't care so much because I am confident that I've seen enough at their prime.
My DMB life is complete:
-Seen DMB 40 times all over the country & Canada [ including Halloween at MSG, James Brown at MSG, Pig in Canada, #34 in San Francisco]
-Seen Dave & Tim 3 times - 97,99,03 [97,99 blew 03 out of the water]
-Seen Dave & Friends 1 time
I think Im good.

I would hope for one more GREAT studio album but in the 5-6 years I've been listening I've been to 10 shows including:
-Red Rocks in 05
-Front row center in 04
-Backstage including talking to Carter a few times in 03
-Dave and Tim in 03
I saw most every song I'd like to, saw Al Green perform "Take Me To The River" twice at Soldier Field and a few nights at Alpine.

i'm still keeping my fingers crossed that they find a way to make new and exciting music while staying grounded in the style, or lack there of, that got them to where they are today. I was listening back to some of my older early 90's shows and it was just so different back then. The songs were jammed differently night to night yada yada.... The music was pure and spontaneous. I think my problem with the band is that they just got too big and have too many commercial expectations to ever be that again. I do feel DM&F and D&T still have that feel, but the band has lost it forever.

I agree. For me, when they break up I look forward to seeing what Dave comes out with or maybe Dave & Tim. For me, Some Devil was a great album and showed that their will be life after DMB.jellyfish wrote: For me, there is nothing to look forward to anymore with respect to the band's creativity, and if they broke up today, I really wouldn't care so much because I am confident that I've seen enough at their prime.
I still listen to a lot of their live shows and especially Dave & Tim shows. After listening to Stand Up several times, I still haven't bought that cd. I'm trying to be an elitist or be someone who doesn't like anything new but I just don't flat out like most of the new stuff that came out.
I think it's a natural progression that if you are totally involved in something that eventually you will get burned out. Look at a lot of the people like Jason who has spent a good portion of his life going to a lot of shows, learning most DMB songs on guitar, collecting a lot of cd's and dvd's of DMB. It's only natural to overdue and need a breath of fresh air.
That's a huge contributing factor, being burned out. Also, they now make music that I can't relate to. In the early days they made music/lyrics that can apply to almost everybody, and hedonism was the main idea behind most of the songs meanings. Dave also wrote about alot about love, again that is something everybody can relate too.mlb1399 wrote:I agree. These new songs have little to offer as far as "deep, interesting" lyrics nor do they relate to everybody. I just don't get his lastest album as far as lyrics are concerened. As mentioned before in Dreamgirl, the song starts out with political undertones then goes right in wathcing a girl sunbathing.

i would like this next baston album to kick ass. have a few baston style hits to please the boppers and then get down to raw, accoustic, songs. let the band play all the time, not just fills, but not to loud....ala pig.... let carter do his thing, dave be less concerned with hooks and more about rythem and feel. (and some btcs style guests and mini jams inbetween songs)
once that album is out the way, lets have a self produced album. let the sound guys who make it sound cool every night have there chance to show what they can do, one final killer album, then stop. (i never like tours when they are promoting an album, you know what you are going to hear before you get there.)

Gervais on Rosa Parks "she was arrested but then that law was changed- but she didnt stop there, she started sitting in the seats saved for disabled people. unbelavable, she talked to the driver when the bus was in motion- did she have the correct change ready? - did she bollox!"
I saw D&T in 99 and 03.....99 was head and shoulder above '03. I got to hear Crazy(old school Captain), #40, PFWYG, Angel From Montgomery, If I Had A Boat...Say Goodbye...All D&T when it was just awesome!jellyfish wrote: -Seen Dave & Tim 3 times - 97,99,03 [97,99 blew 03 out of the water]
