DMB Losing the Jam-Band Edge?
I know this album JUST came out.. and usually the studio songs don't last past 5 minutes. But none of the new dmb songs last past 4:30 or I could be wrong... as I am too lazy to check otherwise. And I know they haven't gone on tour alot to mess with their new songs. But it seems that the last jam song they made was Sugar Will and they shelved it.
I don't know but I am missing the jam songs.. I hope they turn a couple of these into 15 minute jam songs. I like hearing Two Step.. but gets old after hearing so many versions of it.
I'd like to hear your guy's thoughts on this. Thanks.. and if you're gonna flame me.. do so by IM'ing me instead of hiding on a board.
Thanks,
Brian

Please dont bother this man with the usage of Jam Band.
Jam Band = Loose, subjective description of musical acts that perform songs Live for more than 5 minutes.

Back to the original question.
I see where your question is coming from. Back in the early days DMB's fans were highly comprised of "hippies", who typically were involved in the jam band scene. This is evident in the Van Rypers video (1992). They also allowed taping of live performances which later on proved to be a smart move as it allowed their music to be frelly spread across the United States and elsewhere. Does this tactic remind you of any other famous jam band? Perhaps, the Grateful Dead. Also, the band had a laid back attitude in the beginning, hence Dave playing in flannel pajama's (something that is characteristic of a "jam band") Anyway, I wouldn't classify their tunes as jam band music but I would say the early music appealed to mainly people who listened to Jam band music & the band acted in a way that was similar to other jam bands with respect to their taping policys.
I do remember going to DMB shows prior to the Frat boy, teenage girl drunk fuck fest. It really was composed of older, "hippie" like crowd without a teenager lusting for Crash in site. You would also never see little girls in tight outfits trying to get a sip of beer from some horny cock eyed hat wearing toolbox with hopes that he might get "some".
Anyway, this isn't to bash on the new generation of fans but to kind of show that they did "kind of" start out as a jam band. Anyway, we can go back & forth if they are to be considered a jam band. my 2 cents

A jam band losing it's edge. That sounds like an oxymoron.
Anway, DMB isn't a jam band, never were. These new songs are short (and for the most party pretty shitty) but DMB always performs their music the best LIVE!

the problem w/dmb being classified as a jam band is you if you have heard a song that they extend early in a tour then hear it later in the tour, it hasn't changed...this basically means its not an improv and in my opinion, jamming is improving to what you feel, not what you have written in the off-season...my two cents (probably stupid but oh well)

no see thats my thinking too, you can call them a jam band based on their long LIOG, two steps, jimi thing and the like... BUT pop in your CP disks listen to two step, and jimi thing, then pop in the gorge from a year earlier, same jams LIOG stays the same as well. watchtower i love, but the jam/solo in the middle doesnt change a lot. so playing a long time doesnt make you a jam band,DMBiewski wrote:the problem w/dmb being classified as a jam band is you if you have heard a song that they extend early in a tour then hear it later in the tour, it hasn't changed...this basically means its not an improv and in my opinion, jamming is improving to what you feel, not what you have written in the off-season...my two cents (probably stupid but oh well)

Jimi Thing - 17:10
The Stone 10:20
#41 - 11:53

Seems like theyre still jamming (on new songs too) to me. I wouldnt call them a jam band either necessarily, but they do tend to jam out on some of their songs.
