Cry Freedom

Unread post by jellyfish » Thu Feb 24, 2005 10:39 am

Most of you know this but I didn't realize there was a movie appropriately called "Cry Freedom", which portrays Steve Biko's struggles as an anti-aparthied activist. The movie is on tonight at 8:00 pm on the PAX network. IM not sure if ya'll have the same TV lineup though. I checked Austin Texas and it is on at 7:00 pm. So it looks like it will not be confined to my market.

The link to the movie is below.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092804/

The below description of the song was taken from http://www.about.com

"Cry Freedom" is a song about finding equality among everyone - despite the "gold that divide us" and "the fear that divide us". Dave Matthews was born in South Africa and spent some of his childhood there as well. In South Africa in 1950, all people were legally classified into one of four racial groups: white, black, colored, and Indian. The racial categories into which people were placed determined whether they could vote or own land; the jobs they could hold; the schools they could attend; where they could live, eat or play; and the people they could marry. Dave Matthews had a passion for freedom in South Africa and that's reflected in "Cry Freedom". Dave sings, "How can I turn away, brother sister go dancing through my head, human as to human, the future is no place to place your better days." Written in part for the murdered anti-apartheid movement leader, Steve Biko, "Cry Freedom" exemplifies the inspiration that swelled in Dave Matthews' soul. Hope this helped you! Thanks for your question!

It should also be said the Peter Gabriel penned a wonderful song called "Biko". An amazing chant is pre and post song, really a great record and a great track.

It's cool that 3 of my very favorite artists Dave, Paul, & Peter incorporate African based styles into their music.
