why do people hate dmb music?

Unread post by max » Sun Feb 20, 2005 11:08 am

I was at a bar the other night and they started playing DMB and everyone was like "oh boy, Dave Matthews". I mean they don't really hate it, but they definitely don't give it respect like they will Phish or Greatful Dead. It really pisses me off. DMB has this image of being a frat band and maybe closer to pop than those other bands, but that's not exactly why they don't get respect. Even in reviews I've read, sometimes they shit all over Dave. It's like people respect their record sales, but they're not considered a serious rock band. Walk into any Guitar Center and ask anyone who works there what they think of DMB and you'll see what I'm talking about.

I really feel like I'm missing something, because there is no denying that, regardless of your musical tastes, DMB music is good. Dave has good vocal range, the band incorporates a variety of styles including funk, jazz and blues, they combine instruments not typically found in a rock band to produce a sound that is umistakably unique. Dave is also an undeniably charismatic leader with no pretentious bullshit.

I'm not trying to rant and I know we all love DMB, but I'm just pissed off that I even have to defend the band at all.

people that don't play an instument don't have any idea of what it takes to create music like dave! or even try to play his music. after all if it wasn't for daves music i probably wouldn't be playing the guitar today. it's extremely challeging (to me anyways) as far as respect, i respect anyone for there music talents, there style of music is up to them! " People like that will always be out there and they will never learn how to respect until they understand music!

I think DMB has two sides to them as far as fan base. They have the people that know them from Crash, Satellite, and other songs played on the radio and base their opinion on this (which is most of the population) then there is the fans that actually know the music. People that are not really familiar with the band have no clue regarding the Jamming tallent and are not familiar with the more complex songs.

Another thing is DMB is not the type of band I have heard played in many bars. Unless you find a chill place its probably not going to happen very often.

I have alot of friends that make fun of me for being such a huge fan of DMB because they only know the popular songs and don't see anything past that. For those that are interested I try to play some stuff for them that may explain why Im a fan and if they don't like it thats cool. To all their own.

Down here in Brazil things are a little different from up here. Most of the people, and by most I means 90% of the population haven't even heard about DMB. This leaves tu us, fans, a great amount of space to discuss why the hell does this happends.
We all know that DMB doesn't have the hugest marketing strategies except for Canada-USA block.
It's really hard to make someone meet what is DMB music and what it represent to us.
I personally found to be quite amusing that you bother about such thing, because in your situation I would just laugh, since I would be just some hours away from any show.
Actually I really envy you people oO

Their loss
Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away

frat guys, or fraternaty brothers is a thing big in america, where you pay a lot of extra money a year in college to live in a house with other guys that paid to do so. theyre greek organizions technically... i dont knock them, but id never join one...

they call DMB a frat band because back when they were starting and had moved out of the c-ville venues of coffee houses and such, they played frat houses all over the country. mostly in virginia and that area, and the southeast united states...

i dont get how thats something to make fun of, those are great venues... lots of guys in a fraternaty, and frat parties are huge on college campuses so you get a large portion of a universities population at a show.

id do it.
