i guess no one really knows except for dave, but i think Grey Street is about a Girlfriend he used to have who apparently went insane to some degree. Pay for what you get is also supposidly about her i think.

interesting you say that though, i'll listen with that in mind next time

This song was initially recorded during the abandoned studio sessions with Steve Lillywhite spring of 2001, known as the Lillywhite Sessions once leaked to the internet. It was later released on Busted Stuff.

On occasion on the 2003 tour, the band would perform a version of the song which chopped out the last verse. During the first presentation of the chorus, Dave would also add the lines from the second run-through of the chorus ("And though it's red blood bleeding from her now / It feels like cold, blue ice in her heart") to the first. This rendition of the song is available on the Live at ... compilation which came with copies of Dave Matthews' debut solo album, Some Devil.

The song's music video is culled from the band's live performance at The Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Wash., from Sept. 2002. Portions of the music video for "Grace is Gone" were also shot at this time. The video was directed by Jeff Richter and Fenton Williams.

Did it ever occur that their might not be any real meaning? It is probably just a coinsidence that America is the only country that spells gray with an "a" instead of an "e".

Grey Street isn't about Julia Grey. Every other song that is about her was written in Dave's first ever batch of songs...he wrote IBYU, Halloween, and the like before the band ever cut an album. I think nearly a decade later, he probably wouldn't be writing about her.

Sigh. There is somewhere were Dave did give some meaning. I don't know where, and I don't know where the guy went who posted this years ago on a different board.

Now, it'snot about Julia Grey, but someone smei famous, for something.

Sigh, to explain Julia Grey again:

She was a serious g/f of Dave in the late 80s and through 1991. He wrote numerous old songs about her. Eventualy, Dave pruposes to her. He denied him 3 times. Then they broke up. 2 years later, he met Ashley in 1993 during the release of the Recently EP (where Halloween is finally released and has name, it's named that before of the angryness of it and the EP being released on halloween). Now, Halloween was written after they broke up. It was his FUCK YOU song about her. Now, songs about Julia:

After Her (which changed into Satellite, and then wasn't about Julia)
I'll Back You Up
Lover Lay Down
Pay For What You Get (only the chorus)
Recently (might be about her, this I am not sure of)
Kind Intentions/Me And Her
Heathcliffs (might be, not sure of this too)
Hold Me Down (the last known song about her)
Yes, I am in a box
