Thats the way I feel. I got the cd so I've listened to it in high quality and it makes it a bit better but to be honest this cd is just plain average. Better than Everyday, but my goodness they are better than this, its kinda disappointing.wkpggrvn2001 wrote:ehh....i still dont know about it, ive listened 3 or 4 times all of the way through and im still not sure

So all of you that say you don't like some things about the album... explain how they could make it better? I just don't get what you guys want from them. They made an album with songs they liked, and now all of you are like, "it's not their best" or "it's just ok".
Explain to all of us what more you want.

He dropped the f bomb in Central Park and it didnt get a parental advisory. And he drops it a couple times some of the studio ablums. I think it has to be a lot of cursing and explicit lyrics to need a parental advisory. I had to listen to the cds a bunch of times to realize exactly what he was saying.littlefriend420 wrote:Yeah, it's way worse than Rapunzel as far as explicit lyrics go. And I bet it still won't get a Parental Advisory sticker, cuz he doesn't say fuck.

Alright I want better lyrics, I want guests on the album, I want songs with different time signatures, I want Carter to own this album like he has done with all others in the past, I want them to sound like their oldselves not this catchy pop 3:30 minute shit. Stand Up is a fun summer album, but thats all it is. DMB should be ashamed, they are so much better than this. And who cares how much they say they like the songs, how does that help me out if they had a good time making the record? Their best work has been when they were on edge with both BTCS and LWS.Kukini wrote:So all of you that say you don't like some things about the album... explain how they could make it better? Respectable response, and sure, we can all sit around and bitch about lyrics, Carter's simplicity, etc. Why not just appreciate it? Face it, BTCS and the LWS were made more than a half decade ago. People change immensely in 5 years, as did all of the band members. You can sit around and mope about the fact that you don't have another BTCS but I'm not going to waste my time doing that and enjoy what they did with Stand Up.

As a side note, I was listening to Stand Up in my friends dorm room, and like 4 girls came in, and started dancing, they were like "who is that?" I told them and they were like, wow, good song to dance to. I know it makes it seem poppy and whatever, but if people like it and it makes them want to dance, like Batson said was the purpose for some of the songs, they accomplished what they wanted.

Thats not helping very much, it just feeds my argument more. Doesn't it bother you that non-DMB fans like it more than longtime fans?Kukini wrote:As a side note, I was listening to Stand Up in my friends dorm room, and like 4 girls came in, and started dancing, they were like "who is that?" i change my mind. i really like it. but think about it from a drummers point of view...
those beats are FUN to play, and its cool to have a cool beat and having a band playing it with you..
i play with a drummer in school and he is pretty much all about the rock music.. but if we are in a break down he flows into a simple hip hop beat just because its so great to groove to.
but yes, i change my mind, looking at the tabs for these songs, and listening more and not critisizing i realize that this album is great.
Live-- these songs are gonna be excellent i think, carter wont resist the urge to spice them up i tell you!

So are we supposed to appreciate it just because it's DMB and not anyone else??Kukini wrote:Respectable response, and sure, we can all sit around and bitch about lyrics, Carter's simplicity, etc. Why not just appreciate it? To be honest, if I heard this album by any other band I don't think I'd waste the money buying it.
No, I'm not saying it's a horrible album and whatnot, but I'm just somewhat disappointed because I know their potential and this is not it. And yes, there are a few good songs on here and I'll definitely be jamming out to it every once in a while. But personally I would like to hear longer songs, not ones that are under 3 minutes. I'd also like to hear music that will keep me on the edge of my seat and take me on a musical journey. More solos and a few jams that they could sit on for a few minutes (unlike the Intro to American Baby jam where it just drops off).
But having said that, I usually don't put much emphasis on studio albums as I do live shows. Becuase live is where it's at. So we'll see when the summer tour comes around.

55 minutes is kinda short.. with technology today.. i want a 80 minute CD dammit!

I've been listening to Dave Matthews Band for nearly a decade. Most of my friends listen to DMB, they might not be as diehard a fan as I, but they still enjoy it. So you're telling me I should be upset that they (non dmb fans) will like it more than longtime fans?Nitro1515 wrote:Thats not helping very much, it just feeds my argument more. If longtime fans cannot appreciate the fact that the band has moved from the frat-rock of UTTAD and the epic BFTCS and has evolved to the funk of Stand Up to broaden its fanbase, then why be a fan? I love each album for what it is. A change in the direction for the band. They made this album to enjoy playing.
So what if Dave didn't toil over the lyrics this time? It's better than having to analyze over and over what the song is 'really about'. We all know Carter is pretty much a god on the skins. Granted, his work on this album is a bit sparse, there is plenty of room for improvisation on the road. I love what Batson did with Stefan on this album. YOU CAN HEAR HIM. Roi And Boyd are great as usual. The layering of the instruments sounds great, it makes the song more than it is. Each song is a different sound, each with a different musical inspiration. Blues, funk, gospel, hard rock, hip-hop, folk, jazz, samba... you tell me another record on the shelf that has that many influences and I will bow down. But until then, I will continue to think that this is another great step for the Dave Matthews Band.
Peace.
And no, Nitro, it won't bother me that non-DMB fans will like this more than old dave heads. It'll bother me that old dave heads will shun this because it's not what they want to listen to. I mean no offense man, none at all, just try to see it from the bands pov.
