see? a perfect example of respecting without actually liking the musicAppsoldier wrote:he's good...at pretty much every instrument...much like phil collins, only sting doesn't suck and scream really loudly. BUT he's just not my cup of tea. and the police, while good, were nothing but white reggea (sp?). but im glad they got into the hall o fame. they deserved it.eze3484 wrote:Sting's another person that would be a hero. The music that he's made over the years, I don't really listen to, but I respect the fact that he's making it.

This is a dumb arguement, being a better guitarist technically doesn't mean crap. Stevie Ray Vaughnn was technically the greatest guitarist ever. But couldn't write a song for crap, where as someone like Clapton can F'ing write a song.
Mayer writes crappy pop radio friendly turds of songs. Dave writes real music.
Vocally, Mayer's voice is so damn pu$$y, he sounds like his balls still haven't dropped. Dave's voice has experiencebehind it, and I don't mean vocal coaching. Dave's voice can take you to a dark place if need be, and his voice can also make you wanna be in love. Mayer just makes me want to put a 9mm to my head and pull the trigger.

Like I said, SRV was technically the greatest guitarist ever, but in the sense of a song writer he couldn't do what people like Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page could do, and that was write a song with a hook and catch. Pride and Joy was as close as he ever came to that. However, I think SRV was one of the few artists ever who didn't give a fuck about writing a song to please the average ear.fatjack wrote: and who the hell do you think you are saying that SRV can't right a song!? i hope this opinion is based off actual knowledge of SRV's work...
Cliffs Notes: SRV could never have written "white room" and Clapton could never have written "voodoo chile" so that is like comparing JM to DM, it shouldn't be done.
But Sting, uhhh, league of his own.

voodoo chile was written by hendrix ya know...good to see that people respect sting around here...also, SRV writes blues, he never tried to write poppy stuff...he's a blues guy, rarely coming out of that and if so with instrumental jazzier pieces that never completely escaped the blues. I don't think it was ever his goal to make music that had a pop flare...checkii wrote:Like I said, SRV was technically the greatest guitarist ever, but in the sense of a song writer he couldn't do what people like Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page could do, and that was write a song with a hook and catch.
