HE'S THE GODDAMNED BASS PLAYER.

Part of the "rythm section"

It's supposed to be repetitive.
that was me :D

i'm talking more about the 'jams' that the band does. i actually turned a song off one time because it was retarded how he was playing. it was also during a time where he turned the volume up on his bass so he could be the one that was highlighted during the jam.

i dont know, thats just me though. maybe its just cause i adore the shit out of mike gordon because he can actually be the rythm man while still keeping it different and changing shit up.

His solos show a ton of chops, but his bass line is pretty standard, but effective.

I don't think that some of you know what the role of the bass or a bassline is.

I think I have a good grasp on it, drummer's roles are similiar. Its not to be flashy or anything, the number 1 objective to complement the song and not play for yourself

I think Stefan is one of the best modern bassists around. A real Jaco. His few solos show that he's got an incredible amount of talent, but when you're a bassist, your job is to translate rhythms from the drummer to the rest of the band, and he does that too well.

Comparing him to Jaco Pastorius, if you listen to Jaco's work with Joni Mitchell, you'll find that it isn't flashy, but it lines up with whoever the drummer on the album is while complementing Metheny's shimmering solo work and Joni's vocals.

Stefan has to complement Carter's outrageous talent while never stepping out of his boundaries as a bassist, leaving room for Dave to sing, and Boyd and LeRoi to play. Occasionally he's even got to follow Tim or the millions of people the band has guested with. And he does all this without screwing up, or looking like he might be working too hard.

Basically, Stefan is the perfect bassist for the Dave Matthews Band, and any band like them. And I'm willing to bet he could probably fake playing along with, say, Slayer.

its those subtle things he adds, not in your face but if he didnt do it the song would be lacking

So I heard this old funk song ('70's maybe?) on the radio, and it's definately the exact same bass line as Hunger for the great light. I wish I could remember the song name to help point out a possible inspiration for HFTGL. I do recall the line "keep it real" being repeated quite a few times in the song.

Damn! I'm going to drive myself crazy finding the title of this song. And no, it's not the Earth Wind and Fire song...

I'll keep searching...it sounds pretty mainstream so maybe someone is more up on old school funk than I am.
