No doubt. They need to get back to having guests on the album all the songs sound so empty, especially since they have turned Carter into a drum machine in the studio.
All the greats have been "drum machines" in the studio at one time or another. Its just Carter doing some "Pocket Playing" and grooving. Dennis Chambers, sickist chops out there, played with P-Funk and did nothing more then what Carter is doing on Smooth Rider. Dennis is by far better then Carter, and here he is playing even less then what Carter is playing. Oh well.
I understand that. I guess I just don't see the point of it. Carter is the most gifted musician in the band and they completely forgot about him on this past record. I guess we will have to wait until the next one to see if this becomes a permanent thing in the studio.
You dont think Carter had any say in what would be done with the grooves?
I know that's what he wanted. I just don't see the point of it, he's too talented to be scaled back like that. And that is why you need a real producer in there who won't let them make stupid decisions like that.
Pocket playing and simply grooving is not a stupid decision. Nowdays with music, everything is FAST FAST FAST...FAST FILL! And people like that kind of thing because it looks and sounds impressive. No one is grooving. No on is letting the music happen and just backing with a simple groove. I know I speak for many when I say Id rather have a grooving drumming who will play what is needed, and not someone who will just good balls out all the time. Now I understand where you are coming from when you say you want Carter to do more, but what I dont understand is how simple pocket playing can be a "stupid decision".
Yeah I understand. I guess it just came as a shock to me since on every other CD Carter does go nuts. I still think it was the wrong decision though because having him pocket play does not help this band or make them sound very good. I mean you would have to agree that the band does sound better when Carter plays more fills and what not.
Well I dont agree. I think one of the most badass DMB moments, imo, is in Jimi Thing on CP. Right when Leroi starts his solo and Carter just goes into that striaght foward funky backbeat. To me, that was one of DMB's finer moments, simply because how tight the playing was and the incredible groove that came out of it. Of course I like when Carter is doing his Dennis Chambers and Billy Cohbamn thing, that is fine, but I enjoy a fat backbeat groove just as much.

I listened to the Lillywhite sessions in their entirety the other day for the first time in a while and that album had so much fucking potential. BTCS is their best album for many of the same reasons that have been mentioned. Everything from the segues between songs, to the way it is mixed, its perfect.

If LWS were produced all the way, I would agree with you, but they are all just rough drafts.

And good point grvn, I forgot about the segues, they are great!

Carter on Sugar Will is the perfect medium of his playing. Nice straightforward groove w/ some nice fills. Nothing too drastic and overwhelming. Listen to the GGP version.

They were on to something great with the LWS, but of course they didn't follow through with it just like with the summer '04 songs and the utter disappointment that SU is.
Don't give up! I'm telling you, the right producer, the right time - possibly when their contract is over, the best it yet to come.

We've said it dozens of times, right?

Of course we would never know until we heard it, but I would bet you that he would make a much better DMB album than Batson. I don't think he would loop the hell out of the album, and I think he would have the album more thought out then just pressing record and having them play whatever comes to mind.
