its not that he isnt talented, im just into the more old school stuff, where watchtower was a song where roi got to solo, and twostep was a kinda funky beat song. i just miss where old members used to be on songs, not knocking butch's talent just he doesnt have what im lookin for. and another reason is i miss peter, he added a lot and i heard him before butch and peter seems more organic, is butch wouldnt use all the effects id like him more, hence 98.jellyfish wrote:I like Butch and what he adds to the band while playing live. butch was better in 98 when he was a guest and knew his place. now with the effects and taking over solos, im just not likin it
I have always known Butch to "know his place" in the band. I have never heard him showboat, ride over other players, or make the band sound worse.
Do you have a certain recording where Butch doesn't know his place? Otherwise, I completely disagree with you.
Isn't it about time Butch became officially part of DMB?

We obviously have differing opinions on Butch. Let me try to show you where I'm coming from. I've been going to shows since 1995 and in that time I managed to sneek in 40 shows. I really dont know who many times I have heard one particular song but it gets immensly boring hearing the same version over ten years. I applaud & welcome when they bring new "touring" members along with them. Last year they had some Jamal dude at the Va Beach show playing electric guitar for some of the show. It was nice to hear NEW sounds during an old song. Same with Butch, his playing with DMB reminds me of something Phish would play. And I really enjoy Phish live.
It all comes down to these songs evolving or changing with the help of a new instrument or new touring member. And I certainly welcome this evolution of older songs to keep things fresh.
ya know i was gonna ask this like a week ago but i thought someone would tear me apart for it so im glad it got up here...

definitely a lot of his solos remind of page mcconnell. i dont if youve ever heard phish close out a set with squirming coil, but page has a sick solo, where everyone else leaves the stage. come to think of it, it is actually on bittersweet motel i believe. but i caught it live in deer creek and it was amazing. i think butch adds a dynamic to the group that fills out the sound. personally i love the sound of the piano/keyboard/organ and butch definitely puts forth some amazing stuff.jellyfish wrote:We obviously have differing opinions on Butch.
