This. My very first impression of the album.GSR wrote:I also like that it's much more subtle than Big Whiskey was.

Re:
You're right, when i've listened back, there's only one or two moments where Tim is really noticable, one being Gaucho (sp) where it sounds like he's sampled Rockin the Suburbs and another which I cant quite remember.GSR wrote:There's way less electric Tim on this album than on Big Whiskey.
Boyd has some really lovley parts on this album too.
Ricky Bobby: 98% of people will die sometime in their lives.

The more I listen to this album the more I like it. It obviously has it's flaws, but overall I think it's a big step in the right direction.
I don't care for Belly Belly Nice because it really does feel more Big Whiskey, but it's still catchy as hell. And either Rooftop or Snow Outside, I can't remember which, would fit better on Everyday. It kind of reminds me of Fool to Think, and parts remind me of a Stand Up song that I can't place.
I like pretty much everything else. Boyd does sound great. Jeff does a great job of capturing Roi's sound. The lyrics are still a little clunky, but musically it's much better, or at least more interesting, and verse/chours transitions and breakdowns are way smoother.
Obviously, the album isn't anywhere near the big 3/4, but it's easily better than Everyday and Big Whiskey, imo.

I'm wondering if you're only pulling in BYAH since he sings, "I would build you a fire..."GSR wrote:Snow Outside has a very Some Devil/Build You a House feel to it for me.
I think my favorite moment on the album is the bridge in Rooftop.

I agree. The "Jack and Jill" line is probably the worst moment on the album, but I still really like the chorus and the funky music of that song, so it's tolerable. But the saxophone solo is I think the best example of Jeff mimicking Roi's style. Sounds great.littlefriend wrote:The more I listen to this album the more I like it. I like Rooftop a lot, even though "I want you to tell me that you want me" isn't a particularly impressive lyric. I like the heaviness of it, and I love the bridge.
Boyd sounds awesome. I think Dave mentioned that Lillywhite is very good at recording Boyd.
The lyrics are still the weak point, but much improved. If you look at Big Whiskey, I'd say at least eight out of thirteen tracks are very weak, lyrically, just because they're so superficial/literal/shallow. AftW still has its share of weak lines, but it's nowhere near as cheesy as Big Whiskey. It's subtler and more nuanced, especially musically.
Easily better than Everyday, Stand Up, and Big Whiskey. And I think the only reason it's not as good as Busted Stuff is because the BS songs originally came out of the fertile Lillywhite/pre-2001 period.

I agree. It's gotten better to me on each listen, and admittedly, I was not impressed on the first couple listens at all. There are only a couple songs I don't care for. I still think the lyrics aren't very good, but the album sits exactly where you said, maybe just above Everyday.littlefriend wrote:The more I listen to this album the more I like it.
