That's all fine and good. But if I pay money for a studio album (which I did, again. Stupid me.) then I expect something for my money. Everyday was mediocre, Stand Up was utter rubbish and this new one is looking more and more like it's going to fall squarely on the mediocre-to-rubbish part of the quality scale as well.
I don't think it's unreasonable to expect quality music from a band who has a well documented history of putting out quality music. They're just fucking lazy in the studio now and they don't give a fuck what the fans want. Period.

Re: Re:
we all know that isn't going to happen though, so I don't know why people keep bringing up Lillywhite.Nitro1515 wrote:I agree they need Lillywhite, they aren't disciplined enough on their own. And Busted Stuff doesn't count because all the songs were already written.littlefriend wrote:I believe that there are only a couple of ways this band is going to put out an album that comes close to the quality of their pre-Everyday stuff:
1.) Dave takes back primary songwriting responsibilities.
2.) The band hires Steve Lillywhite to produce their next album.
3.) ???
4. )Profit.
Sadly, #4 is the only thing likely to happen despite the obvious lack of quality product.
pretty sure everyone in the band wants to forget that experience, even though the music was so good.

That seems to be what the problem was.Banjobach wrote:I don't understand what went awry with Lillywhite. Was he too much of a perfectionist for the band?

Pretty revealing article in EW about them almost breaking up and about how different SU and ED were

Well, that's saying something. We hadn’t put out an album for a while and the album that we did put out [2005's Mark Batson-produced Stand Up] wasn't us. I feel like it should have said "Dave Matthews Band featuring Mark Batson." There’s some great songs on [2002's Glen Ballard-produced] Everyday, but I think that should have said "Dave Matthews Band featuring Glen Ballard." I think we started to get lost right around towards the end of making the third album, [1998's] Before These Crowded Streets. The stuff after that, although there’s many good things about it, I think it was not our best work.

Re:
That kinda stuff upsets me. Let the music speak for itself if you believe its that good. Its like he is beginning to defend the album before its even released, which is exactly what they did for SU and we all know how that turned out.jsgksu wrote:From that article:
I think this is the band's best album. We have the spontaneity of our live performances but mixed in with some carefully, carefully, crafted music. I’m sure there are fans that will argue. But I don’t care what they say. They’re wrong.
