im sure this has probably been asked before.. but my skill with searching isnt all that great. i've always wondered about the name the Dave Matthews Band, why not some othername? does anyone know why they decided to name the band after dave? obviously he is the singer/front man, but the other musicians are so incredibly talented as well.

someone correct me if this is wrong
at an early gig they had a name (i forget what it was) but the people at the venue sorta got confused and announced them as dave matthews' band - pretty much stuck - thats the very basics, someone else could fill in much better i'm sure

I think that name just kind of evolved. I think I remember hearing in an interview once, that they were at a venue or talking with people, before they really had a name, and someone asked what their name was, and I believe Boyd, semi-jokingly said "we're the Dave Matthews Band" and I guess it stuck.

Perhaps not though.

They tossed around a couple of ideas for a name. The one they almost used was "Dumella." I remember an interview with Carter where he was asked about the bands name and he said that whenever they went on stage at Millers people would ask other people in the crowd what band that was and since they didn't have a name people would say "That's Dave Matthews' Band." They liked it so they just went with that for lack of being more creative.

I never heard that story, but I did hear the one where they didnt have a name so they were announced as DMB

dave always seems to bring up how unoriginal the name is

But I mean, when he went solo, couldnt he have used a different name for the band? or would that defeat the purpose of going "solo"

i'm seeing Ants Marching this friday in the city after happy hour...i've never saw a dmb tribute band before so it should be interesting. The lead singer doesn't even play guitar that pussy
