After a series of fortunate events I was informed that TR would be flying into NYC on Friday for his show in the Hamptons on Saturday. I was invited to tag along since I was in town. Only downside, I had to meet them at the hotel by 8 AM for a ride out to the venue with them. I sucked it up and got there with minutes to spare and off we headed to the Hamptons. I wasn't sure what to expect because I had heard so many things but never had actually been that far out on the island. Previous to this, Soldo's house was the furthest out on the LIE I had been. The area itself seemed quite beautiful with a slight hint of ocean in the air. They had been threatening the possibility of rain all afternoon but thankfully it never transpired despite the ominous clouds overhead and the oppressive humidity it ended up being a wonderful evening of music.
Tim & Dave seemed to be having an exceptionally good TIMe and I am guessing that is due in part at least to the wonderful way we were treated all day by the festival staff. Great food, good conversation, all very friendly and professional which makes for a fantastic enviroment to have to work. I would say we were all very well taken care of. After a lite lunch it was out to the stage for a soundcheck. All the way thru soundcheck TR and Dave were joking with each other and generally just goofing off only reinforcing my feeling that everyone was exceptional mood and it was probably going to be a great show. Soundcheck had set my mood for the rest of the evening.
After soundcheck it was back to our tricked out dressing room and green room that amounted to the basement of beautiful building complete with indoor coy pond and meditation room. Jokes were made, food was eaten, socializing was done, setlists were written. Essentially TIMe was killed until showTIMe. People always think rock and roll and touring are all one big party but actually in my experience the biggest part of rock and roll is the hurry-up-and-wait. Some days seem longer than others but with good folks around the TIMe seems to fly by. Subsequently, before I knew it, it was TIMe to make our way to the stage.
We arrived from the dressing room to the backstage area on golf carts and were greeted at our hospitality tent by event staff and of all people Nile Rodgers who turned out to be affiliated with the benefit side of the show. He seemed to gush over Dave a little and Dave seemed humbled a bit as it turns out Dave is a huge fan of his. Nile asked if TR and Dave would mind signing one of his guitars and both T&D seemed honored at the opportunity. They signed the guitar and we made our way thru the hospitality tent to the stage. Lights go down, flashlights come on, T&D take the stage to a thunderous welcome(from the crowd not the clouds). The setlist looked a little like this:
So Damn Lucky
Old Dirt Hill
Crush
Stay or Leave
Grace Is Gone
Save Me
Don't Drink
#27
Corn Bread
Oh
Grave Digger
Loving Wings
Where Are You Going
Satellite
Lie In Our Graves
TIM (Stream>>Led Zep).
Sister
The Maker
Crash
#41
Nancies
------------------------------------------
Some Devil (Dave Solo)
Ants
All in all I thought it was a fantastic set despite my lack of familiarity with most of Dave's catalog. I am of course becoming a little more familiar with multiple T&D shows under my belt now. Based on the few shows I have seen T&D seemed to be in their usual form when they are together, laughing and joking on stage and generally cutting up like 2 teenagers on a Saturday nite. After the first few songs Dave introduced TR by saying "I'd like you to welcome my good friend Tim Reynolds!" Crowd erupts with applause. As it dies down Dave continues with "If there are any sounds you hear tonite of unknown orgin just want you to know they come from him!" motioning toward TR. Again the crowd erupts sprinkled with laughter this TIMe. Another example of the light-hearted mood onstage between TR and Dave was right after TR finished his solo song and Dave came back out and sat down just as someone yelled "Tim your immortal!" Dave shot back with "I know you said 'Tim your immortal' but for just a split second I thought you said Tim your in porno!" Audience laughs, Dave pauses and follows up with "And he IS!!!" Dave also mentioned a few TIMes during the set how he was happy there were not guys in kilts in the front row and that he finds that quite disturbing. Not sure how this phobia manifested itself originallly but I bet it's an interesting story. By the end of the evening alot of the audience had crowded around the front of the stage and they were really giving it back to T&D and it showed in their performance. I spent most of the middle of the set back at the soundboard checking the beautiful setting of the event, the awesome sound and lights and the overall generally KEWL vibe of the event.I made my way back to the stage after TR's solo song. A few more songs after that and we were into encore territory. Dave went back for one by himself and then TR joined him for the final song of the evening, "Ants".
Immediately after the show Dave & TR began discussing how much fun they were having on stage and TR told Dave that there were a few songs where he was on the verge of hysterical laughter and had to avoid looking at Dave to keep from losing it. Moments after they had come off stage, Nile Rodgers showed up and was now absolutely gushing over TR. Not surprising, since I can't imagine any musician as talented as Niles not being able to recognize what he had just seen in TR's perfomance. I think TR might have caught him a little off guard. Anyway, Niles seemed to be blown away by the show. Next we were introduced to a scraggly bunch of guys. Two of which turned out to be Adam Sandler and Rob Schneider. Rob immediately sidled up to TR and I observed that they were approximately the same height. By now of course I am used to TR's height so he doesn't seem that short to me until I see him next to Dave. LOL Rob was also quite gushing to TR about what he had just seen. Not sure if Rob is a guitar player but I got the impression from the conversation that he must at least know a little about guitar from his critique of TR's set. Safe to say he was blown away by TR just like Niles had been. Eventually TR got a chance to tell Adam that he liked it when Adam played guitar. Adam told TR the same thing and TR responded with "We should jam together someTIMe!" Adam said he was up for it so hopefully we can look forward to a Adam Sandler/Tim Reynolds collaboration in the not too distant future. As I motored back over to the dressing rooms with TR he told me he would really enjoying doing that because he really likes Adam's music, especially the lyrics. Surprise, surprise. LOL
After a late nite snack of pizza, sushi and cheese it was back on the bus and back to Manhattan. It had taken us 3 hours to get out there earlier in the day so I was hoping it wouldn't take as long to get back given the lateness of the hour and because I was so looking forward to getting back and getting some sleep as I had not gone to bed on Friday nite since I was worried about getting up for the 8 AM bus call.(Boy, that's one helluva run on sentence. My english teacher would be so proud. LOL) I had now been up for 41 hours but thanx to the spirit of day I wasn't really feeling the lack of sleep but I knew my bed was going to feel good when I got back. As I predicted, sleep came quickly as I put head to pillow. Life is good!.

27 is my favorite number, I wanna hear this song
And whats with the whole using a number thing when its not in the order in which he wrote it, I thought thats how he picked the numbered songs.
Anyway:
"i've been high, and i've been down
my head in the clouds and my hands in the ground
in the arms of a woman, i found my way home
in the arms of a woman, i had been lost
when i'm so lost that this losing feel like dying
i hope you'll be by me then
when i'm so lost that this losing feel like dying
i hope you'll be by me then
as a young man, i was afraid
of my life, what would I make?
i would make love, what will i hate?
what bittersweet road will i take to my grave?
and if i'm old 'til this oldness have me dying
i hope you'll be by me then
oh, when i'm old 'til this oldness has me dying
i hope you'll be by me then
i hope you'll be by me then
sick of you, and i'm sick of me
i'm sick of wars, and i'm sick of peace
i'm sick of sound 'til i'm sick of silence
oh, sick of the darkness 'til i'm sick of the light
when i'm so sick that this sickness has me dying
i hope you'll be by me then
i hope you'll be by me then
oh, when i'm so sick that this sickness have me dying
i hope you'll be by me then
once, as a boy, i saw what happened
i saw them beat him down to the cold, cold ground
watched those big boys beat that man down
i was too weak to make a stand
when i'm so weak that this weakness feels like dying
i hope you'll be by me then
when i'm so weak that this weakness feels like dying
i hope you'll be by me then
when i'm old 'til this oldness feels like dying
i hope you'll be by me then
so i will live as i see fit
there will be those who will not like it
but in the arms of a woman, i found my way home
so to the arms of a woman, i will go
And if i'm old 'til this oldness has me dying
i hope you'll be by me then"

It's been posted that maybe the song was written on the 27th. I've also heard that it could be a reference to some sort of tobacco/cigs in the south.jsgksu wrote:27 is my favorite number, I wanna hear this song
