dmfollower wrote:I personally love spotlight. I love the lyrics most and i love the music just as much. I had never noticed people saying they hate this song until dave started calling it a turd during like, the 96-97 d&t tour. Ofcourse, he also bashed it in 94' at blockbuster music solo. Got me, i still listen to it all the time.

If i had to give a reason why i think dave hated it, it would be that i think maybe the lyrics make him sound a little more famous and hot-headed then he was when he wrote the song. Its never bothered me, i never took the song that seriously. It just seems to me that dave stopped playing it abruptly, right about when the band hit it big. I think it could have been a hit, the lyrics are beautiful and ironic.

Just like the porch monkey, we should bring spotlight back!! :o

I love spotlight too, I hope that before the end of DMB they will play it again...

it would be perfect to play at their last show

That would be awesome! But he'd probably just play "Steady as We Go"

Spotlight is boring. Barre chords.

And the last song they ever play will be ants. I'm pretty sure dave even said something to that effect at some point. It's pretty much their anthem.

Difficulty of chords = quality of song, all of a sudden?

Right?

I love Spotlight. Always have. Maybe because it was one of the first songs I "discovered" as a new fan, one I had never heard before and no one I knew had either. Whatever the reason I love it.

Not necessarily. But in this case it contributes.

"in the spotlight, life is so peachy, yeah yeah yeah yeah?"

Seriously. The lyrics blow. The chords and structure are uninspired.

I see some of the lyrics not being so straightforward, not so literal. Like he's being sarcastic, like "yeah, right, life is so peachy..."

Right. I get that. They still suck.

I think after Dave got popular and "In the spotlight" he probably hated the song immediately. It sounds like bragging now almost.

Yeah, I've read that his distaste for the song was pretty much a result of them getting big. The song *is* about how "making it" is a bunch of "steal your soul" kinda thing, haha.

That and it's a turd.
