Re: What DMB song to perform?
Just out of curiousity, whats your favorite dmb song?MakoMako wrote:I know this question has been asked half a dozen times, and probably the exact same situation as well.
The thing that I'm asking is about what DMB song should I play for my school's talent show. I'm doing it with a band, no mine mind you, but the band is full. They have a guitarist, keyboardist, bass, drummer, saxophonist, and they can get hold of a violinist if it comes down to it. They want me to come in to act as the sort of 'Dave' of the group. I'd be playing Dave's part and singing, while the other guitarist would be playing Tim's part.
My biggest question are there any songs you would definatly suggest that both Tim and Dave shine in, and sounds absolutely wonderful as a full-band with Tim there? Any help would be appriciated, considering the sooner we pick the song, the sooner we can start practicing.
P.S.
We'd like to do something more upbeat, not needing to be well-known, just upbeat as far as Dave goes. Thanks again.

It changes all the time, but I think right now I'm a bit stuck on Stay or Leave again. I'm likeing Old Dirt Hill, only because I just learned how to play it solo. But Stay or Leave definatly.
Normally that would solve the problem, but the band that I'm playing with isn't quite as big of a fan as me, so it also comes down to what they want too. And they'll probably go for a slight bit more main-stream or older DMB.

never ever play spotlight. if the band wants rapunzel give them rapunzel. Play this shit outta the song. Make sure the drummer's cowbell can be heard from miles away cause that's what kids nowadays like.

I would go with All Along the Watchtower if A) you have a strong ass voice that can just belt it out (especially at the end) and B) if you can just rock out a fuckin' sweet jam. If you have a tim/guitar player and a keyboardist it should be very easily done. If you nail both the vocals and the music, your audience would be left awe struck i think.
If not that you'd probably be better off going with a more well known song. It's sad, but unfortunately the less-known songs that we all know and love and that we think freakin' rock won't get an eclectic crowd like a high school crowd going. I'd say go with something well-known if all else fails.
I like the idea of Rapunzel too, tough to pull off in a full band, but bad ass if you can do it.

Well, we've got a few months, since the talent show isn't until the spring. The entire group have been musicians on some level since they were young. I think we might be able to pull off Rapunzel.
But, I do like the idea of All Along the Watchtower if no one else does it. It tends to be a static solo that someone does every year, but they often do the Dylan version. My voice isn't quite strong enough yet, but its been improving quite a bit. Four months ago it was horrible, now it's not too bad.
Thanks again for all of the replies guys.

do you by anychance have any recordings of your voice when it was horrible?? and maybe one now? haha.. i always enjoy hearing people who sing badly and then improve months later, it inspires me. Mangold sticks out in my mind as one... also if your doing any exercises to improve your voice id love to hear em haha.MakoMako wrote:Well, we've got a few months, since the talent show isn't until the spring. Haha, actually, yes I do. I just uploaded one onto my soundclick for the occasion. I recognize that my voice sucked then, and might not be TOO much better now, but it is better.proudestmonkey41 wrote:do you by anychance have any recordings of your voice when it was horrible?? and maybe one now? haha.. i always enjoy hearing people who sing badly and then improve months later, it inspires me. There you go. The one labeled Demo is the one of me sounding like crap. The same song is Put It On A Chain that I did the other day.[/list]

We did Watchtower for my talent show when I was a senior (like ages ago) and it came out real nice. Our keyboard player and electric guitarist dueled back and forth for a while, it was awesome. If you really let loose and just belt that shit out people should go nuts, they did at my school anyway.
Rapunzel's a good choice too, though, it's got a really nice jam at the end that's fun for the whole band. So both would work.
