Sigh, the boards are getting worse. I said from the start if the word gay and such was used like that on the boards, I wasn't going to hang around, and people didn't use it, so I stayed and was happy.
Now, if it is going to be used like that, I might leave, since it is very insulting. Common usage or not, it is spiteful to someone's sexuality, weither you mean it or not. Was it right in the early 1900s to say nigger then? It was common, so was it just? If that wasn't, then how is this just? If it's only one person using it, I think I might do another elliot thing, but if it gets used like that by more than one person, I would consider leaving
.
If you shot someone to death, and weither you meant to shoot him or not, the person would still be dead.

i can see both points of this debate - yes, i bet a good number of us hear it and/or say it regularly, without even thinking, and i can see how that could be insulting - but i don't really see it stopping anytime soon either, and its not like "gay" is the only insulting word that has made its way into everyday speak, so the whole common arguement has a point too
and whichever side you support, you're probably not gonna change - so i say lets just drop it - SO, how about that saddam character liking DMB

I don't understand what the bolded section means. Please dumb it down for me.mbgreen wrote:You missed the point.winglet82 wrote:Yeah I know a lot of English professors that would disagree that "Common usage means nothing, especially when it comes to the English language."Every English teacher I know holds a certain amount of contempt for the general population's butchering of language. Go ahead and write a paper for your english teacher in the common vernacular, and see what grade you get in return. The beneficial creation of words through common usage, which is what I assume youre referring to, does not apply to slang.

Dude, don't get your panties wet. I've been sayin "gay" like that for years and years, and so have you. Does that make us all ignant? It's definitely agreed upon that it has nothing to do with homosexuality, and means that something "sucks"(no pun intended). That's just something Ranting is gonna have to get over. Besides he's bisexual, not gay, right?
. I have nothing against homosexuals and nothing against Ranting. I like Ranting, he is very helpful and seems like a nice guy. In fact, I find homos very entertaining(when they are prancing around or hitting on me or something).

OK, well the thing is...There are homosexuals that would love to think that they "prance around" and act all funny and cute, believe me. But I guess there are some that would not like to be thought of that way, so I didn't mean to offend those ones, sorry.DMBFan63 wrote:that may have gone overboard with it, jason..DmbFanJason wrote:Dude, don't get your panties wet. Shakespeare writes a play. He invents a word (probably a tweaking of an existing latin term or something.) People see the play, and start using the word. It extends the english language, by way of common use. Thats a beneficial creation of a word, made a word through common use. "Bling bling" is a word that was invented by way of common usage. Its now in the dictionary. That is not a beneficial word created through common use. Its the dumbing down of a language through the common practice of a large group of idiots. I feel that "gay" being used in place of "stupid" falls into the same category as "bling-bling." I trust most english professors would agree with what I've written. Some will say that "bling-bling" is not inferior, just different. I disagree...only rarely does a slang term make its way into the language and change it for the better.winglet82 wrote:I don't understand what the bolded section means. Somewhat clearer? Anyway, thats what I meant when I said that common practice means little.

Oh, Saddam. Rotting in solitary confinment and swimming in his own piss and shit as we speak. And he still hasn't had any of his weapons found.
Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away

I have talked with you jason, and you said you weren't going to say words like that around me and the boards and such. Also, I like men the way homosexuals like men, so I am part homosexual.
You DID step over the line there Jason, and if you do that again, don't talk to me again.
I will not accept the butching of that word. People didn't give up getting rid of the word nigger, or we would be using it today. I stand up against discriminating words such as Gay, Fag, Dike, and more. I will fight those words, til I die. But before that happens, I will teach my childern the fight, and they will fight til they die, and so on. If you are going to use them and don't want to fight, don't use them around me.
