I couldn't wait any longer, so I downloaded it last night, with the intention of buying it, anyway. As much as I hate to say this, it's a good thing I did or else I would have ended up wasting $20.
My first and probably biggest problem with the album is the overall absence of Dave's rhythm guitar. In most songs, his riffs are light plucking which are lost beneath the rest of the band. The only songs that sound similar to his usual riffs are You Might Die Trying and Hello Again.
Another problem I have is Carter's drumming. Whatever was done in the studio makes him sound like synthesized, hip-hop beats, which is perhaps Batson's decision.
As far as the actual recording goes, in many songs, Dave's voice has had some studio effects thrown on top of it, which doesn't make sense considering how much smoothness and melody his voice adds to the music.
Overall, I enjoyed Everyday more than this because at least that album seemed to have a purpose and direction. It sounded like a fluid album that was put together with thought. Stand Up just seems to be an experimental mish-mash of new styles and studio magic that don't go with each other, or with the band's skills.
This isn't to say that I want them to become stagnant or boring with unchaging material. I thought the Lillywhite Sessions/Busted Stuff were a step in the right direction, moving forward while keeping with the sound that the band has perfected and that we've all come to love. Hopefully, they take a step back for the next one.

I completely agree, especially about the part about Carter's drumming. It really does get lost as some overproduced kind of hip-hop. I'd probably place this album on the same rung as Everyday, however, and I, too, was hoping that they would come out with something great after The Lillywhite Sessions, especially after hearing the new songs live over the summer.TheGuyThatJaneLikes wrote:I couldn't wait any longer, so I downloaded it last night, with the intention of buying it, anyway. Looks like a negative response so far.
After listenign to it in the car for awhile I get a different vibe from it. A better vibe than listening to clips from the website. It's like I can actually put the songs to use now. The sad thing is I cant get Carter's vocals out of my head from "Old Dirt Hill".

That's waht Im referring to.KahnTheRevelator wrote:hahahahahaha
the ONLY complaint I have from the album is Carter's nasaly ass singing "bring that beat back to me again."
Batson: "allright Carter, we're gonna lay it down again, but this time, put these plugs in your nose and sit on your thumb. Also we're gonna jack it up with chorus."

And then, one of those songs is gonna come on, and they're gonne be groovin out, ya know, and then they're suddenly gonna realize that its the new record that they were, ya know, and then they're gonna have to just..ya know...and it will almost be like a re-birth for those people, cause this is a good record.

During the Brainstorming for Stand Up
Carter: So how bout I just fart on a snare drum for 60 minutes for our next album??
Dave: Yeah, that's the exact kind of thinking I had in mind when I recorded Everyday with Glen Ballard! I should have invited the rest of the band to come to record that album - What do you think, Leroi?
Leroi: (Incoherent Mumble)
Dave: That's a great thought, Leroi - Let's bring in a Hip Hop Producer.
Boyd: I don't kn(interupted)
Dave: Boyd, do we have to remind you that we let you come out with True Reflections and bought 4 of the 12 copies sold - You have no say in this!
Carter: Come on, Dave - at least let him pluck his fiddle for the entire first single.
Dave: OK OK, that's fair - Stefan, you're being quiet....What are your thoughts on the Hip Hop Producer?
Stefan: I'm not too keen on the idea - What do I get out of the deal?
Leroi: (Incoherent Mumble)
Carter: Leroi's right - You were on the cover of the last album. What more do you want?
Dave: Always the non-African Americans who want all the attention!
Stefan: That's it - I have one demand or I'm out on the album and the band!!!
Boyd: What's that?
Stefan: I get to take the album to all my favorite Ski Resorts in the Northeast to play before it comes out.
Dave: Do you remember the last time you took an unfinished album to a Ski Resort?!??!??!
Leroi: (Incoherent Mumble)
Carter: Yeah, why should we have to change our music to alienate our devoted fans again??
Dave: That's it, dust off the drum machine - Carter's been replaced. Carter, pack up your hockey jerseys - we'll see you on the tour bus in 3 months!
Stefan: How bout we dust off the Fire Dancer logo to trick old school fans into buying the album - I bet we can charge $6 for shipping 1 CD!
Boyd: That's the kind of thinking that will allow us someday to buy a small country - Let's keep that up!
Dave: Let's go smoke a joint and listen to some Eminem - He drops some dope beats!
Leroi: (incoherent mumbling)
Stefan: You're right! Maybe his producer is available....
Dave: But not Dr Dre - He'll take way too much of a cut!

That hockey jerseys line had me laughing out loud, that was a hilarious read, thanks.KahnTheRevelator wrote:Some guy on the nancies boards wrote this:

My mom used to tell me that posting on nancies.org will rot your brain....or maybe that was sitting to close to the television.
That thread was hilarious! Of course you had many *true* fans crying foul. I love DMB as much as anyone else but even I have to admit that is some funny shit right there.
Occasionally you still find some good threads amongst the "who would win in a cage match between stefan vs. boyd" but for the most part I've found it difficult to carry on any conversation over there. Thank the good lord for these boards - money, money community.

If you want to be the popular one at a party, here's a good thing to do: Go up to some people who are talking and laughing and say, "Well, technically that's illegal." It might fit in with what somebody just said. And even if it doesn't, so what, I hate this stupid party.
