I guess I might have to check STDH a little more closely, but I think the convoluted rhythm you're hearing is just due to heavy syncopation.PilotC150 wrote:What STDH does so well is mix time signitures. I swear the guitar, vocals and drums are all playing in a different time signature. It's really frustrating to listen to when you break it down. But if you sit back and just listen, it's a great song. I've ALWAYS thought so, and wondering why people always bash it. Same with IDI. I like it. I like the engery, and the really aren't as bad as people say they are.ticohans wrote:The fact that it has no legit chorus is one of the reasons I like the song. It's good when you can break away from a traditional mold and pull it off, which sleep to dream her does beautifully.

"AWAKEN" (live at the house of blues)
ARTIST: "YES"
Hendrix, nor Clapton and especially not Santana could toch this mastrpiece.
By the by, does anybody have the MP3 of LOVE OF MY LIFE with TIM and CARLOS doing the leads...Carlos plucks a few sucky notes, and Tim rips it up!!!
p.s. Boyd may (as you say) suck now, but just listen to the transition/jam from Nancies to Warehouse on RedRocks...amazing energy and breathtaking violin work no matter what anybody says

fire, just listened to the solo a couple of times, and there are moments that are wonderful, and moments that are not as wonderful. Best parts were easily when he was playing the double stops around 6:30. The harmonies there are great, the rhythm changes just a little bit throughout, but it's nice and clean. It's the only part that makes me go, "ohhhh." My main issue with Boyd is that he just isn't that melodic, and his rhythm doesn't add much. When soloing, he gets locked in to a pattern of two or three notes that are all right next to each other and a single rhythm and plays that over and over and over and over and over and over again, then thinks of something new, moves to those couple of notes and set rhythm and plays that over and over and over and over again, etcetera. Now, as a single unit, most of the things he vamps on are really good, but few of them can bear the repeating that he puts them through. They simply don't hold up, in my opinion, as they are melodically and rhythmically stagnant. Stringing together a lot of melodically and rhythmically stagnant stuff does not make you a good player. There are times when the emphasis that a repetition provides is wonderful and amazing. However, it loses its effect when abused, just like any expressive device. It's about knowing how to disperse those moments throughout a jam. Listen to Leroy and you'll know what I'm talking about. He has a great melodic sense about him, and doesn't feel the need to always play blazingly fast. Many times speed is a cover up for bad lines. It's not about quantity, but quality. If someone did on the guitar what Boyd does on the violin as if he were some great shredder, he'd be booed of the stage. I guess I've just always been surrounded by great violinists. I play with a few guys at a worship service every thursday night here at davidson. I'm on the piano, there's a guy on guitar, a guy on hand drums and a guy on violin. The guy who plays the violin is named Dave, and I've never heard Boyd do anything that Dave can't play circles around. He blows Boyd out of the water every week, every time I hear him play. Boyd just isn't as impressive as the other musicians in DMB, and because of it, he sticks out like a sore thumb many times. Just my opinion.
