If i have one critique of this band, its that they dont take enough risks, but fuck it, they have all the money in the world, who cares, go crazy!
That would be nice, if the Dave and Boyd could play their instruments well enough.

I mean, we've heard Dave's and Boyd's solos. They couldn't hold their own in any real jazz situation. I've actually never even gotten why people consider DMB is part jazz.
yeah i thought about that... how bout bela fleck and the fleck tones with carter and roi guesting on the whole album... and dave could scat on a track.

Fede
2 things if we're talking about straight ahead jazz as mentioned above.
1.) He doesn't play jazz, he fiddles. Maybe he can play it, but he's never shown any ability to.
2.)I enjoy his solos on the studio discs, but have you ever heard live recordings? Not officially released ones but taped shows? He's out of tune, out of time, and really pretty awful.
Since I'm not much of a jazz fan (though I have never heard STRAIGHT AHEAD jazz) I wouldn't know.

2) How come?? I can't really believe it.

Yeah, Boyd is VERY repetitive and often out of tune... but you gotta love his stage presence and positive attitude. I always laugh when i watch the gorge dvd, when they show clips from talking with band members, he says this at least 3 times "There's a beautiful Gorge in the background. It just puts everyone in a positive state of mind"

He messes up every once in awhile. Have you ever played violin? Probably the hardest string instrument to play. period. And the guy's running all over the stage and he's absolutely WHAILING most of the time. He dosn't sound "terrible", his finger misses a mark by a millimeter and it's out of tune for a second. I wouldn't go so far to say "he sounds terrible on taped shows."

I would.

I appreciate his enthusisam and passion for his playing. I love that live energy. I have a sense of that passion when I play live.

But,

He is a professional musician. The mistakes he makes are embarrassing. Ever hear him play Pig, Crush, Nancies or Jimi Thing live from a taped show? Those tunes sounds terrible. He has sour notes alll over the place. I wish I still had the version of Pig that really showcased it.

and Fede, Jazz is kinda like it's own musical language. It's much more difficult to play and comprehend than pop music. In jazz, you "play the changes" which means you pair certain scales, or more importantly, notes, with the chords of the song. Instead of staying in A minor for a whole song you would think "A Dorian, D Mixolydian, G Major". And that could be in the course of just 2 bars.

Jazz constantly keeps you on your toes, and the most important aspect of jazz is the improvisation. I don't think Boyd has the knowledge in that field to play jazz.

Since you've never listened to any, let me suggest some cds for you if you'd like to check it out- Miles Davis "Kind of Blue", "ESP". John Coltrane "Blue Train", "Giant Steps". Wes Montgomery "Full house (live)", "Incredible Jazz guitar". Those are some popular starter jazz cds.

They are much more jazz infulenced. They aren't like, bebop like Coltrane or Wes or anything, but they have a really heavy jazz influence.

Well said, and good calls as jazz starter-albums. Kind of Blue is probably my favorite jazz album of all time. And in terms of jazz guitarists, you can't go wrong with wes montgomery. I would also recommend some early George Benson.

and some other great jazz guitarists (Benson is good but got really poppy in his later years) - Herb Ellis, Barney Kessel, John Scofield (Highly recommend him), Jim Hall.

Also the thelonius monk john coltrane live at carnegie hall cd that was unearthed in 2005 is fucking phenomenal.

As far as DMB making a jazz album, i understand that dave's playing may not be quite up to par and thats ok, he could have a very understated role which could be cool. Besides, Tim could play a lot of guitar.

Say what you want about boyd, he is a better musician than most people think.

Plus stefan and carter make an extremely tight pocket and leroi is just fantastic.

It could be done, sure it wouldnt be pure jazz, but neither was bitches brew. I also think dave could be a rad jazz singer, not just scatting.
Do I listen to pop music because I'm miserable or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?

Ah Django. He was the first jazz guitarist to inspire me.

The Monk and Trane disc is awesome. It's great being a music major, I go into the Music Resource Center at the Music Building and milk it of all it's great discs all the time. I've taken out maybe 20-25 since I've been here.

I think Carter, Leroi and Butch would make incredible music. Actually, more just Carter and Butch. Stefan might be cool too.

I maintain that Boyd sucks though. :P
