Dave Matthews Band in a Swedish Magazine

Unread post by Swede » Fri Aug 25, 2006 11:04 am

Ok guys!! From a Swedish Music magazine!! Its called Red Hot Rock Magazine!

Brock I know this is wrong forum for this and feel free to move it. I just thought this could be fun reading and all members look in nDMN.

SORRY FOR THE SHITTY SPELLING. I WROTE IT OF THE MAGAZINE FROM SWEDISH-- I left some of it (that i dont think is fun to read)

Here we go:

Worlds smallest famous MEGABAND!

Do you know anything about Dave Matthews Band? No? Well your not alone. In Sweden there are almost no chance to buy there cd´s and they have only played here one time in the last eleven years. In the band home country USA its however different. Over there they have sold 30 million records and consider being one of the most popular live band under the last decade. With the europerelease of the bands last product Stand Up Dave Matthews now wants to give some attention to us on the other side of the pool of water.

De biggest Rock stars have always been coming from USA and England. Its been that way since the birth of rock in the 50´s. We other came happy with our Europe: HIM, Rammstein, The Cardigans; Scorpions and Sugarbabes. But compare of the flood of megastars that came from the other side of the Antlantic and from the britt islands we kinda suck. That’s why its fascinating when it sometimes come band that´s huge in their home country but have no luck in Europe or the rest of the world. In that group we have Bob Seger, The allman brothers Band and Pish. Yes! Even bands like Creed sell good in their home country but only peanuts in Europe. Dave Matthews Band have sold more than 30 million cd´s. They are today one of the most popular liveband and turnover 57 million dollar only in touring in North America. But in Sweden they as good as untouched.

The band visiting this side of the antlantic have been extremely sporadic. The only concert in Sweden to this day was in February 1995 in Gino here in Stockholm. After that they have made some half hearted tours in our continent, last time was summer of 1998 when they opened for Rolling Stones in Germany, Belgium and Holland. Is there any chance that we are gonna see them here this year? We ask the bands founder, singer, leader Dave Matthews himself.
-We are going to try to do it in a different way than before. Now we finally have a relationship with a record company that thinks like us. V2 and the band have made a strategy for Europe. I´m probably coming over alone first and do a tour. I´m flexible. I can play for 100-200 people and build up a interest and after that the band can come down. The most obvious, if the whole band is here is to play in some of the biggest summer festivals.

One reason that the band is not so big over here is that its hard to get the records. Dave: No, we took them back because they went straight to hell. We decided to get another company than BMG to cooperate with in Europe. Maybe we release some kind of collection with stuff from our whole career and release it in Europe but we are not in a hurry. I have a friend named Brady Blade. He plays with me in Solo record and he lives in Sweden so I know through him that the interest is not so big over there. I think it´s because of the touring. We started that way, played for 100-200 people on small places on the east coast in U.S and built up a interest. Its been taking us 15 years to be in place we are today. I think we have to do the same way in Europe, well that’s my opinion anyway. The sort of music we play people wanna find out by them self and not have it squezzed down your throat. That could be because the parcel we introduce is not good looking and not cleared up, says Dave and laugh.

Dave Matthews band was formed in Charlottesville in Virgina on the American east coast in the beginning of 1991, but Dave himself is born in South Africa.
- I moved around a lot in my life. My father was a scientist so we moved around a lot. I was born in South Africa and we moved to USA when i was 2 years old. Then we moved to England when i was 6 and then back to U.S when i was 8, the year after back to South Africa until i was 13 and then back to U.S again. I left South Africa to avoid military service after upper secondary school and then back and forth between U.S and South Africa until the Band was started. I always say that my life would be very different without the band. Because the same year we started the band Nelson Mandela became the president in South Africa and i believe that if we didn’t start the band i would have moved back to South Africa for good.

But he didn’t. Instead he gathered a gang of musician from the area. The drummer Carter Beauford was one of the first he contacted. – I heard about him years before i decided to create a band and when i finally did, it turned out that he was free on the afternoons. The other members was the saxophone player LeRoi Moore who played with Carter in different Jazz bands before, Violin player Boyd Tinsley and then the little guy Stefan Lessard. That’s the same guys who play in the band today. Dave Matthews Band made a name fast with their special instrumental set and their own unique sound, a electric mix of adult rock, folk music, jazz, classic and sounds from all corners of the world. Their style is aware planed. I have never been any big planer but I believe that you should follow your impulse and your instinct. I think we all like what we are playing or how we play it. We hade never any big plans of how we wanted the band to sound together, what style we should have etc. We just wanted to play together. Stefan was only 15 years old when we started the band and he had only played for 8 months. But he had the IT. Carter was in that time already one of the worlds best drummers and he decided to join a band that the bas player only played for 8 months. He had a feeling that the little shit had IT. We never sat down and thought “This is the music we are going to play”. That’s our type of music, we play what we feel now.

Dave Mattthews Band continued touring all over the east coast and made a name as an amazing live group. The first album Remember two things was recorded live on the bands own label in November 1993. It sold gold fast, which is amazing for a realise in a own label. The band wrote a contract with RCA and in September 1994 came the studio debut in a big label, Under the table and dreaming. The record was produced by Steve Lillywhite (Peter Gabriel, U2, Rolling Stones, Morrisey etc) and had the success singles “The best of what around and What would you say” and new recorded favourite songs from Remember two things, like Ants Marching, Satellite and tripping billies. The band went on a tour and made a stop in Europe for the first time. When the came home the record had sold over 4 million copy´s in USA only. Crash made a second place debut on the billboard in April 19996. Same year the band, with the federal bootlegbranch and managed to nail a big number illegal bootlegmakers. Dave Matthews Band have always encouraged people to record for own use but they don’t want bootlegcompanys to make money of their music. The bands first official live cd “live at red rock” 8-15-95 sold over 1 million in 6 months. In 1998 .

-We want to make music that’s edifying , says dave. When we went in the studio and recorded the songs for Stand Up the president election was on, and the so called war against terror was on it´s forth “proud” year. We where in the studio and made happy music but I think the lyrics speaks for what went on outside the studio. I like lyrics in a happy song that goes: JIPPI! We are all going to die. You could say that the new cd have a more relaxed feeling that the other records.I think on the other records we have been a little scared, like soldiers on their way in to war. On this record we are all relaxed, just chilling in the studio jamming, and hade some wine. It was a really good feeling to work with mark Batsom that we all look up to. He have worked with really different kind of music like Eminem, 50 Cent and that kind. I think people was surprised when we picked him but I think the record speak for itself. The million of fans wait for the next studio record that comes late this year or in the beginning of 2007. I guess we poor hungry people here in Sweden have order the records on import in waiting for the cd to be realised here. And we can always hope that Dave Matthews and the other go absolutely crazy and decides to come here to play, because its Live that Dave Matthews band are amazing.

Once again.. Sorry for the bad spelling and im to tired after writing all this to read it again try tro to fix the "bad spelled shit"

Ggood read, thanks Swede. He said a lot of stuuf that was said when he came over here. Its a bit worrying though that he says Stand Up "speaks for itself" though.

Thanks for taking the time to translate that Swede. Dave's last few quotes there are kinda disturbing.
