Dave and drugs

I wanted to post this because I was reading about some people's views on Dave's "drug" use on the "What song could you replace dave on" in the guitar discussion forum.

But anyway, has Dave ever admitted to doing drugs in any interviews or anything like that? It's obvious that he's got a bit of a different personality and he talks like he's burnt out, but do you guys think he's honestly stoned all the time or drunk on stage? I don't think so. When I'm really drunk, like REALLY drunk, i fuck up all the time when I'm trying to play. Sort of the same with being stoned. I don't think he could be as percise with his guitar playing as he is if he was fucked up all the time. Anyway, just wanted to see what everybody else thought.

I've heard a recording that Dave played where he was absolutely wrecked. It wasn't one of his shows at all. I thinke he jumped on stage between sets of another band.

I know he's talked about drug use. I've heard stories that Tripping Billies was about an acid trip (this is just what I've heard, not what I know as fact)

Not to mention he's appeared on Politically Incorrect 3 times and all 3 times Marijuana has come up.

Let me see if I can find which show he was on stage for all wasted.

I remember an interview where he said he writes most of his songs while drunk, and obviously some of his songs have lots of drug references. I don't think he does that stuff as much now though.

With the band, where being drunk or high could have pretty nasty sounding consequenses, (like his fuckup on rapunzel back in 98) he keeps it pretty sober for the most part these days. His antics are really just part of who he is as a performer.

Now when he plays with Tim, he's been a little more loose, particularly in shows like or the 99 tour, where he sounded drunk or high a lot. On storytellers he was noticeably bombed, and forgot the words to crush, for example. I think he has toned it down since he has gotten married and particularly since he has had children. He sounded a little loosey goosey a few times on the 2003 tour, but it didn't reflect on his playing, so it must have been nothing more than a pre-show joint or whiskey.

They also have a lot of drinking references. Crush, Grace Is Gone, Say Goodbye, Stay or Leave....

I remember him saying that he completely agreed with legalizing marijiuana, but doesn't imply on using marijuana.

Also, Step Into the Light, a story said that a group of guys went in backstage and offered a joint and they all turned it down. Boyd made the analogy of going into work stoned or drunk, they dont do it. As for me, I think there are times where hes drunk as hell but not all the time. Back in some of the first times I listened to Dave, I always thought he was drunk, but now not as often. Just they way he acts.

I can see him being a little bit stoned more than being drunk on stage. At least when you're high your concentration is up a little bit. When you're drunk I think your guitar playing just gets sloppy. And when i say "your guitar playing" I mean "my guitar playing" lol.

Pretty much, he doesnt state that he does it, but doesnt deny that he does do it.

he said he had had experences with drugs many a time, he told a funny story about being stonned in london last week.

He used to do acid a lot. He said it was his drug of chose. He did used to be a hippie. He also had a problem with alcohol in the mid to late nineties. And Tim smokes a lot of pot, I remember him saying at a show he quit weed until he went on tour with Tim. Also, Rhyme and Reason was about his struggles with heroin. He's been all over the board, pretty typical for a rock star.

All signs point to dave having used weed, chances are he has dipped into things like heropin and acid for sure. Alcohol has always been there. Lately he is toned down a bit. But when he came out to introduce soulive at my show he definately seemed baked.

I think the whole DMB image and lifestyle implies a connection to cannibis in the older days, the band did it and a bit of the fans did as well

if you guys go to the aol sessions, and watch the interviews he is asked what the biggest misconception about him is.. to which he answers "that i smoke alot of weed, i think it should be legal, but that doesnt mean i smoke alot of weed" or somethign along those lines

Well yea because he has a family and is grown up now. To think he never smoked weed a lot would probably be false.
