daves writing process

Unread post by jmasta » Thu Oct 13, 2005 10:50 am

I am doing a project for school involving daves writing style as opposed to his music. I am having a hard time finding anything out there that says what exactly daves writing process is, are there any interviews or anything you guys know of that would be able to help me out with this?

thanks

Music first. Then he mumbles some stuff at soundchecks to find a melody. Then plays the songs at shows and makes some rough lyrics. Then goes in to the studio and finishes the lyrics.

on the latest storytellers, he talks about how his approach has involved to be more minimalist, "dont try and put 100 world in four bars of music"

...........then on the otherhand he was talking about dreamgirl.....solid but not his best lyrics.

i think i heard him say that he wrote dreaming tree as a poem when he was younger.....but im unsure where i read it......maby an artical, maby in a forum
Gervais on Rosa Parks "she was arrested but then that law was changed- but she didnt stop there, she started sitting in the seats saved for disabled people. unbelavable, she talked to the driver when the bus was in motion- did she have the correct change ready? - did she bollox!"

I wonder how long he took to write the Some Devil songs. Some of those lyrics are great.

He still does it that way sometimes. Examples: Sugar Will, Hello Again, Joyride, Crazy Easy.

Now he goes into the studio, plays three or four notes on his guitar at random and out of the blue batson jumps up, runs over to him, and, figuring that those few notes might make a nice backing loop for a hip-hop song, has the band write a whole song around them.
Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away

Dave writes his lyrics as he sees fit. Im sure he writes them both before & after he creates the music for the song.

I just remember an interview on the Today Show (day before the Central Park Concert) when dave says he wishes he woudlnt have to write lyrics to every song, and that it is the last part of the song that gets completed. If he had a choice, he wouldnt have to write lyrics.

It was just if he had a choice, he would rather not have to for every song.
