when dave first started do we know if he'd record his riffs first on his little 8 track he had listen to it and write lyrics from there, or just play and write at the same time?

I don't know about young dave. But on the ultra sound it shows him playing and just kinda humming the vocals because he hadn't written the lyrics yet. He knew how he wanted them to sound, he just didn't know which words he was going to say.

Then certain words came organically, and then he would build the song from there.
Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away

A common question about songwriting, what comes first the music or the lyrics.

For me it's the music then the lyrics. Probably because I'm not good enough to do it the other way around.
