I thought Dave's sister was murdered by her husband, I believe Dave said that during a davespeak a few weeks later (at a Dave and Tim show) and this concert was the day after he got back from South Africa to take a break from what just happened. I'm 99% sure about this because I downloaded this concert and it came from his mouth. It was a great concert too but my computer crashed and I lost it all say 2 songs I put to CD so I don't know the date. Sad stuff.[/quote]

This is an excerpt from "Step Into The Light"(revised version-after LWS and Everyday) and the author quotes Dave from that D&T show you are talking about:

"...As 1994 began, a tragic event rocked the Matthews family.
Dave took the stage for an acoustic show with Tim Reynolds at the Werlands in New York City on 19 January. As their informal gig got underway, Matthews annouced: 'Anyway, I got in this morning from a seventeen hour flight...I sound like a comedian-"I was flying in this morning"...But anyway I flew...I was in South Africa where I'm from and my family's from. That's a country full of lots of violence and lots of hatred. But it's also full of lors of love and lots of good people. But I was there mourning the very recent of my sister. So this evening goes out to her and in her memory.' Dave then launched into an achingly mellow version of 'Tripping Billies.' He was singing for his older sister, Anne.
South Africa was, in fact, the site of the senseless shootings of Dave's sister, Anne, and her husband. Dave has asked for the details not be publicized for the sake of Anne's children, whom he and Jane are now raising in Virginia."

I hope this helps to clarify (or confuse) the truth of the matter. I'm not holding Morgan Delancey to the printed word in his book, but I think he's covered enough background for me at least to give me credit. I think this passage speaks for itself. Anyway, there ya go.
