I saw the opening show for D & F's & when they played Solsbury Hill I couldn't have been happier. I really could have died & been content.Davy28 wrote:Does anybody here think D&F butchered Solsbury hill? Or at least did a lousy job of doing it justice? That is just my personal opinion, but I have always prefered the soulful, acoustic and piano driven Peter Gabriel version to the goofy sounding electric laden D&F version. The bonaroo version sounds all techno and sped up like a sound track to an old video game.
I say that because there are many covers that D&F did that I like more than the original version (i.e. Tell Me Something Good, Hey Bulldog, Thank You).
Solsbury Hill is not one of them.
Of course they didn't butcher the song.

I saw them play it at the Allstate show in Chicago and I thought they did a really good job. I just thought it was funny that Dave stared down the whole time during the song, my guess is he was reading the lyrics cuz he couldn't remember them. I don't blame him. Anyone else notice this at other shows?

Its interesting because when you're at the concert, as I was at Key Arena, just the prospect of being within 200 feet of your music idol makes you not care whether a song is subpar or not, but hearing Solsbury Hill again from the Bonaroo and Oakland shows that I have, I think they did a much better job with the other covers. Thats just hindsight, though.
Hell, I listened to spoon again from the first gorge show in 2003 that I went to and it was the same thing. None of the cool sax and violin fills during the verses. Dave couldn't hit a single high note. The song just sounded empty. But when I was actually at the concert I didn't care one iota.

Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away
