Lilly White Sessions
Does anyone know the date of when they recorded these songs? Or atleast a rough idea cause i'm sure they didn't do it all in one day. Anway, thanks.

the LWS, the songs are great, the CD is crap. The songs are dead. They are dry, and you can feel a hatred about them playing the songs. Again, the songs are great, but I don't listen to it much because it's dead. SU&D is just stressed out all over the place and it's supposed to be rock. Captain is airy and depressing and depressant. Digging a Ditch is pretty boring, it's going nowhere. JTR's set up is great, the lyrics and the rest of the band seem to just be in the background not giving their all. Bartender, after it lifts off, gets good, bore it's eh. Now Grey Street, I love listening to the end, I hate listening to the begining. The begining is too light, too stressed. It gets rocking during the third verse, but before it, nothing. Monkey Man has so much potntial (but of course will never be played) but it sounds like a random new jam that never was tweaked. Raven, desperate, and the lyrics have no emotion. Big Eyed Fish, though, is great, same with Grace Is Gone. They are the only 2 that are worth listening to. Busted Stuff seems like just Dave sitting down and recording a solo acoustic/vocals one, leaves the room, and the others dripple their music on it.
I see 100% why dmb didn't want to continue the sessions. Busted Stuff is far superior. Everything is tightened, the lyrics have feeling, the band is giving their all, no airy space, no loose ends all over the place.

You've got to be kidding me. Of course the songs sound dead. They were pre-production rough sketches. There were only a couple songs that were actually finished, and those that were sounded superb. Big Eyed Fish was one of the finished songs, and it was 10x better on the LWS than BS. There was real emotion there, real depression. Grey Street was butchered in the production process. Shadow of its former self. Raven went from being a song about real depression and emotion into a song that will never again see the light of day. Bartender didn't change at all...I don't see how you can say one is better than the other, really. Captain on LWS sounds like it was meant to sound...like when D&T play it. Not like the theme to a porno, like it is on BS. Sure, not everything was polished, but it wasn't meant to be yet....and there is nothing wrong with depressing songs if they accurately communicate what the songwriter is feeling at the moment.Ranting Thespian wrote:the LWS, the songs are great, the CD is crap. I remember going to concerts in 2000, and saying to myself, "whoa, we have another potential masterwork here." I said the same thing after listening to the LWS. I puked when I heard the dull, dry, uninspired BS. It was a consolation album.

I agree with BTCS- my favorite album. I think I've just listened to UTTAD too many times. It bores me now. I need to let it sit and ferment for a while.i like tictacs wrote:I disagree. I NEVER bashed the songs. I thought I portrayed 90% of what you said in what I posted, mbgreen. Also, no I am not too happy with Captain on Busted Stuff, but the LWS just was not pulled together. Also, yes the recordings weren't good. That's what I was commenting on. In 2000, I LOVE those versions of the songs better than any studio recording or other tours. The LWS, like you said, wasn't mixed and such. That's what makes it t a band album to me. I can't see why people like it over Busted Stuff, since they are just not recorded well at all (with exception to a few). The songs are fantastic great songs, but as an album at a whole, it just lacks so much because it's not done, and in which Busted Stuff is better.
