DMB lyrics are (perhaps) deep

Unread post by Knoxville19 » Wed Oct 02, 2002 9:02 am

Ok this might sound a little farfetched but if you look at the lyris to what you are you could draw parallels (how the hell do you spell that?!!?) to the philosopher Kirkegaard......

Stay with me now, Kirkegaard said that by making choices in your life you actually become what you are... and Dave wrote if you live life, then you become what you are.... and we all know that life is based on choices.....

any thoughts on this or other "deep-tunes"?

stay loose! it's now 3:52pm in Denmark.... funny huh?

While I agree with you... I think it's too soon in this board's history to rack our brains for philosophical smarts

While it is very early in the boards history.....when is a little brain racking bad?!?!?! Anyway, I fully agree. His lyrics are def deep and meaningful...I could name a million quotes that just make you think:

"Could I have been anyone other than me?"
"Turns out not where but who your with that really matters"
"Look here are we, on this starry night staring into space and I must say, 'I feel as small as dust lying down here.'"
"Everyday things change, but basically they stay the same."
 "Crash Into Me"

Alright, I'm done.....I am just moved by so many of his songs....Amazing lyricist and even better guitarist. He's a perfect match to be a musician. If anyone knows him, let him know...he could potentially make it big

Good lines seem to just pour out of Dave. Even on Everyday there are lines that just seem to carry so much meaning.

Many good ones have already been listed. I think that Dave just has an uncany ability to put universal feelings into poetic verse.

"When I was young I didn't think about it, now I can't get it out of my mind"

I totally agree with all of you, One of the more cryptic songs I think is Typical Situation. the way he counts down is very armageddony, it's also filled with lots of metaphores and yummy stuff!

Catch ya later, Denmark out!

Don't Drink the Water is an incredible song because of its deep, symbolic lyrics and Best of What's Around is pretty special to me since I moved around a bit growing up, and take it from me, everywhere is pretty much the same, it's the people that make the difference.

Knoxville19, I feel your pain about not getting to see any DMB concerts. I'm a Norwegian studying in Australia, and neither places have been spioled with a lot of DMB. Never been to a show either.

Isn't it 'Ya'll smell good this evening' (your signature)?

Typical Situation is based on a poem that counts down like that, so Dave can't take all the credit for that one. However, I'm amazed by his songwriting skills. DMB fans are some lucky bastards, aren't we?!

Terje.

If you think about why Dave's lyrics are so good its the universality of the lyrics. ANyone can relate to songs like dancing nancies, and the meanings behind billies and two step. This is the same thing that made Shakespeare so appealing, and still that way today. I think Minarets is very deep in its references to his sister's life. Seek Up is deep on many levels. OSW and the couting backwards thing is deep, but if you listen to it, the phrase/sentence structure is reversed and "seven oceans pummel, the shores of the sea" oceans dont pummel the sea...its rather like the brain teasers Zen Buddhists use to help them reach enlightenment. Last thing im gonna mention is Proudest monkey, in this song he thinks of animals and humans as one community and we are just the proud, gloating high class members of it. Very deep.

this may just be me but I think dave rights his lyrics like his music, he just sings whatever he thinks of and it usually ends up sounding good.

I dont think he actually puts a lot of thought or meaning into them, they just come out that way.

Like he would just think of something random and then keep adding to it

not to say they arent deep or he doesnt have amazing talent in writing lyrics, I just wouldnt be surprised if they come out a lot deeper sounding then he expects. he would just read them back and go damn, thats some good shit

I could be wrong though
This is my signature, I hope you enjoy it.

The lyrics to both seek up and gravedigger are up on my wall...nancies is goin up there too but i think almost every dave song has a good quote...he's a smart guy and you can tell he does his readin and shit cause of all this deep stuff he writes...even in space between, my mom was readin some book and it says "the space between whats wrong and right..." dont remember what it said after but it was ki nda weird my mom's like yeah this is from the dave song but he's a smart guy, he's not some dude that just writes lyrics only about how some girl broke his heart like a lot of punk bands do now, which isnt bad, just not dave
"...Sing and dance I'll play for you tonight The thrill of it all Dark clouds may hang on me sometimes But I'll work it out..."

Dave Matthews - Dancing Nancies
