great post, I agree, dave definitely has the upper hand right now in terms of lyrics, however I don't think johns lyrics are bad, they're witty and flow well, however, the subject matter can just get a little old, I think his next album will be a lot better, check out something's missing...it has some great lyrics in my opinion nomatter who's writing.madtadder wrote:Dave can write a song a hell of a lot better than Mayer can (and i'm not a Mayer basher, I love his stuff, hell I've seen him 3 times), and Dave's guitar playing can be complex and his strumming patterns can be insane at times (like The Stone, how does he just strum that when he's playing single notes? it boggles the mind), but John is a far superior guitar player. He has some of the fastest hands i've ever seen (next to Tim Reynolds, of course). He has some stretches that would make even Dave's hand cramp up. If you disagree with me on any of these, download Sucker, Neon, The Wind Cries Mary, or Man on the Side and try and tell me Dave is the better guitar player. They're both amazing guitarists, but it's obvious that Mayer spent more time on the guitar aspect instead of the lyrics. But he's still a young kid, give him time, and in some years his songs may be deeper than they are right now.
you do realize that john mayer can play circles around howie day...I just got back from a john show tonight, and man, that guy can play and just puts on a great show. I really wasn't excited but he brought me in. his guitar skills are just unmatched in this whole line of music and he makes sure we know at every show when he just takes everything up a notch...he just tore it up tonight...great show.DmBillies41 wrote:two different styles hard to compare but here goes...john gets better guitarist, dave gets better all around musician...i liked john til i saw him live at central park and got bored out of my mind, worst concert i've been to...didnt like him after that...he's talented but he's too poppy for me...he has major potential though...off topic, but i'm down with howie day
Alright....honestly, this is the last time. He wasn't saying that Howie was better than John. All her was saying was that he was INTO Howie Day. There is no need to com in and say "You Do Realize" when he wasn't trying to say anything except his opinion. You feel the need to make sure what you think is what goes regardless of the topic of conversation. Stop doing shit like that or your posts are going to get deleted...peacegcom007 wrote: you do realize that john mayer can play circles around howie day...I just got back from a john show tonight, and man, that guy can play and just puts on a great show. there is no need for any hostility in this situation and what you're doing really is unwarranted. I have a right to say what I think, and I'm questioning his judgement here...I think way too many people are biased about this whole issue (yourself included maybe?) and it completely clouds there judgement. For one thing, he said John was too poppy, however stating he was into howie day...cirmunstancial evidence for me at this point because I happen to know a bit about howie day and that he follows the 1 5 4 5 poppy-like progression in almost all his songs far more than mayer and matthews. by musical standards, howie is more poppy in his songwritings, therefore I question his judgement. and as poppy as mayer may be, strictly from a musical stamdpoint, he is far less poppy than any of the above. his statements don't make sense and I was refuting them. the only reason anyone would delete any of my posts in here is because they are biased against the whole issue. I haven't flamed anyone nor have I really insulted anyone blatantly. I've questioned their judgement, but that is it. as far as taking on similar traits in other posts, I only do so when I know I am right. You'll probably bring up captain, but again, who was right? the guy who made the stone videos played it wrong and thinks the dmb tab books is right and I said that he played it wrong and the tab books are wrong. who is right? the truth is a tough pill to swallow at times and it's not as if I haven't here. I don't insist that all my ways are correct...did I refute catherine's tab? no, I said great job. I've helped people out when I can...people have PMed me asking help and I helped them out adamently. I made some comments on one thread that I honestly didn't mean to sound harsh but upon re-reading them realized they were and immediately and profusely appologized and tried to clarify. and getting back to the situation at hand, I hardly did anything worthy of getting my posts deleted. Not in the slightest. While what I said wasn't "puppy dogs and ice cream" nice, it really doesn't serve to be all to unsettling either. so in conclusion, I simply say that if any of my posts that are along those lines are deleted, I wholly and completely feel as a rational person that it would be highly unwarranted and based on a biased decision.jkanter wrote:Alright....honestly, this is the last time. ive gotta say, you hit it right there. mayer is too poppy. i start listening to his music and i wanna gouge my ears out because its so cliche chick-rock. maybe you guys like that stuff, i dunno. but by the way, who's the other guitarist in his band? when i was at the concert i ended up watching him, 'cause he was doing some pretty cool fill work on this white tele...DmBillies41 wrote:two different styles hard to compare but here goes...john gets better guitarist, dave gets better all around musician...i liked john til i saw him live at central park and got bored out of my mind, worst concert i've been to...didnt like him after that...he's talented but he's too poppy for me...he has major potential though...off topic, but i'm down with howie day
dave doesn't play any lead really though, I don't get at all what you're saying...he's got that jimi thing thing he does every now and again that is very, very blah, that's about it...what other times has dave done solos and on what albums???waffle_house_jam wrote:ive gotta say, you hit it right there. mayer is too poppy. i start listening to his music and i wanna gouge my ears out because its so cliche chick-rock. maybe you guys like that stuff, i dunno. but by the way, who's the other guitarist in his band? when i was at the concert i ended up watching him, 'cause he was doing some pretty cool fill work on this white tele...DmBillies41 wrote:two different styles hard to compare but here goes...john gets better guitarist, dave gets better all around musician...i liked john til i saw him live at central park and got bored out of my mind, worst concert i've been to...didnt like him after that...he's talented but he's too poppy for me...he has major potential though...off topic, but i'm down with howie day
i still stand by my vote for Dave as best guitarist... and as a response to earlier comments, of course i know that Tim and other people come and play with dave... but if you will watch concert videos and listen closely to albums you can see his lead talent shine through.
as he said, this is the album he had to make to get out there, the next album is going to be a lot different, just wait...I really think he'll shock you allgravedigger wrote:Room For Squares is poppy but there's some great guitar stuff behind that poppiness. He did a lot besides that album and I'm sure will do a lot more.
