A question, a reflection, and an endorsement.
Why is our country divided?
Why has this division been growing?
Can we not all agree that we are a country that supports its families, that protects its citizens and respects its neighbors?
A country that educates its children?
Are we not a country that can lead by example rather than by force?
Is ours a government of the people, by the people, for the people?
I would like to think so.
But I believe that corporate greed and its involvement in policy making, along with political cronyism have made it nearly impossible for the people to govern.
So we fight amongst ourselves over the spin of political slogans and half truths.
And so we are divided.
It is time for a change and that is why I support Barack Obama for President.
Respectfully,
Dave Matthews

As much as I love Dave, I really don't like celebrities endorsing candidates. While you could argue that Dave was just trying to say that he likes Obama, and that he was going to vote for him, he was clearly, like all celebrity endorsements, trying to get other people to vote for him. This would be fine, except that no one actually listens to what the celebrities have to say on the candidates. They all just say, "hey, Dave Matthews supports Obama, and Dave is awesome, so I'm going to vote for Obama!"In this way I think celebrity endorsements give political candidates an unfair advantage. Even worse is that Chuck for Huck thing. besides the fact that the whole Chuck Norris joke thing died down a while ago, Chuck Norris is a major tool. Just the fact that some idiot like Chuck Norris is backing Huckabee makes me not want to vote for him. It would be ok if not for the fact that Huckabee is trying to capitalize on Chuck's support. Sorry for the long rant, but this has been on my mind for a while.

Celebrity endorsements don't bother me. If I was a celebrity, and I really believed in a particular candidate, I'd probably do the same thing. Celebrity endorsements are just another pillar in the Parthenon of campaigning. You've got commercials, ads, flyers, debates, representatives, speeches, etc., and endorsements are just one more thing that a candidate can, and in my opinion by all means should, take advantage of. Some strategies might be more effective than others, sure, but to me, an endorsement is no more unfair than a commercial or anything else. People can say, "Wow, this pamphlet is sweet. I'm voting for XYZ!" just as easily as they can blindly follow anything else, celebrities included. It's all part of the game. And good for Obama if Dave supports him. I don't think he called Dave up and was like, "Hey, could you help me win over some hippies?" Dave believes in a candidate and wants to see that person win. He has a right to reach out and try to support Obama just as much as I have a right to argue with my friends about why I believe Obama should be the next president. Just cause Dave is famous, has many fans, and obviously a certain amount of influence shouldn't eliminate his right to voice his opinion.

Obama had admitted to using so many drugs in the past that all the hippies are probably going to be voting for him anyways. Especially since he is in favor of decriminalizing marijuana laws.GSR wrote:I don't think he called Dave up and was like, "Hey, could you help me win over some hippies?"

I doubt that is the case. The hippies would most likely vote for Ron Paul who believes that all drugs should be decriminalized.

I don't know about you guys, maybe its just my ultra-liberal college but all the hippies I know when asked about politics are like, "Man... see, fuck the government." Then they pull their piece out of their burlap sack and toke up.
Edit: or are you talking about old hippies?

I dont think Dave should have emailed this out -
he has all our email address's because we signed to dmband.com / warehouse simply because we like his music - not to hear his opinion on everything.
I agree with dave in this case but its a slipperly slope between this public endorsement and in 10 years time - being Bono

Just cause he told you his opinion doesn't mean you have to agree with it.paulaitchison wrote:I dont think Dave should have emailed this out -
