Basically the band went in the studio with Lillywhite as producer in 2000. Some of the songs the band worked on during that time are included in the "Lillywhite Sessions" floating around on the net. Reportedly, Dave was feeling depressed, and went through a heavy drinking period (again, this is speculation), and the band just wan't "feeling" the songs. The songs were ditched, and Dave sought out Mark Ballard and Everyday was born.
