Three exciting announcements came out of the DMB camp today. First, the band's long-awaited follow-up to Stand Up will be released on April 14, 2009. Second, they will embark on a short, 17-date tour this coming spring in support of the new album. Finally, Tim Reynolds, Jeff Coffin, and Rashawn Ross will all reprise their roles from 2008 on the upcoming tour.
The itinerary for this tour is unusual, based on past tours. While these shorter tours typically focus on the Northeast and Midwest and skip the rest of the country, the 2009 Spring Tour will do just the opposite, winding its way around the outside edges of the country from New York to the Southeast, then to the Southwest, and ending in Las Vegas.
It's been a long time since a tour was based this heavily in the Southeast. The band will return to its hometown of Charlottesville before making its first stop in Alabama since 2001. They will then proceed to their two usual North Carolina venues before playing a college festival at Vanderbilt and the New Orleans Jazzfest. The band will conclude its Southeast run with two nights at the new Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in suburban Atlanta.
Openers for this tour include long-time friends the Roots, contemporary bluegrass band Old Crow Medicine Show (who have roots up the Interstate from DMB in Harrisonburg, Virginia), North Carolina-based folk-rock duo the Avett Brothers, and another fellow Virginian, Jason Mraz.
