Umphrey's McGee wrote:09.15.04 - Concerning Glowsticks
There is a very serious matter that we've addressed before, but in light of recent happenings at Umphrey's McGee shows, it unfortunately has to be addressed again: Do Not bring glowsticks to Umphrey's McGee concerts. Last weekend in Madison, we politely asked the audience not to throw them at the band or on the stage, but throughout the night, fans continued to throw glow sticks on the stage and in some instances, at band members and members of our production crew. In the future, we need your help to let other folks know that throwing things at the band is only going to interfere with the band's ability to put on the best show that we can.
We appreciate the crowd's energy and involvement in the shows, but glowsticks are the wrong way to use this energy. We truly appreciate the crowd's part in the overall energy of the show, but those who want to be involved need to find new ways of showing your enthusiasm without throwing glowsticks.
I'm not sure if those who are throwing them understand the seriousness of the matter . . . when we're up there playing music and objects are flying at us or past our heads, we're most concerned with not losing an eye, as opposed to performing to the best of our ability. At the end of the night, the result can be incredibly frustrating - there is no doubt that throwing things at the band distracts us and often breaks down what we are trying to create. We want to give you, the audience, everything we've got, and when something like avoiding glowsticks is a reason that we fall short, it seems absurd that we let glowsticks in to our shows in the first place.
Of course, the majority of you who are reading this already know everything that was just said. However, we need to find a way to let people who aren't as in the loop know that this kind of behavior is not going to be tolerated in the future.
The following will be enforced to the best of our ability . . . keep in mind that these are in the interest of having the best and safest show for everyone:
1) Glowsticks will no longer be allowed to be brought in to Umphrey's McGee concerts. If you attempt to bring them in and are caught, you may be denied admission. This policy will be clearly stated outside every show so that if you do have them with you, you will have an opportunity to leave them behind.
2) Anyone who throws a glowstick (or anything else, for that matter) at the stage will be found and escorted immediately out of the venue.
If glowsticks do happen to pop up at a future show, please exercise responsibility and either help us by putting them away or keeping them to yourself. We've reached a point where we're either going to need the audience to help us police this behavior or we're going to need to hire more security on a nightly basis. We'd hope that we can make the former work because the latter would certainly be a disappointing choice to have to make.
It is too bad that it has come to this point, but people need to realize that glowsticks can cause injuries to the band, and to other fans, and damage our equipment as well.
Folks, the glowsticks are no longer clever. Please keep that in mind.
Sincerely,
Umphrey's McGee

Yeah, the guy at fenway who was throwing them in the air was about two rows in front of me. i thought it was cool, he did it whenever there was something awesome happening, like the DAH DAAH DAAAAAAAH in too much or when the two step intro ends and they bust into the song.
that being said, umph are a bunch of pussies.

if they're thrown AT the band, then they should so something about it. that's just plain disrespectful and annoying.
but phish, for example, has like glow stick wars or whatever (their fans i mean). they just throw them within the crowd, and i think that is just kind of a fun thing at a concert. looks cool too.
