Yeah I know what you are talking about with that distinct sound. I hate that but I don't think all of their songs have it. just a few do, like Give It Away, I hate that song. I don't know too much about bass but I would say Flea is a pretty good bass player. Probably better than Stefan.

Oh good, because I almost hate the RHCP.

Explain. I think they're amazing, just sorta got into them hard core last year, and want to know why some people don't like them.

They're annoying. They have a very distinctive sound that I don't like, which stems mainly from that bastard of a singer's crap voice. Flea sucks ass, and I don't like their songs. They certainly don't earn the title of "amazing," in the way that Sufjan or even DMB is. They're just punks, and their songs have no depth.

And they are just punks.... .....wow. im not a huge fan, but have listened to them for close to 15 years now. But to say they are just punks and have no depth is just unsupported slander.

And call me crazy, but I would have to believe George Clinton knows more and has better musically judgement/analysis than you.

I don't know. I think Flea just plays a bigger role in his band and Stefan has the sax and violin that may sometimes drown him out a little bit. But whatever, they are both pretty awesome bass players.

stefan plays more of conventional bass i guess by just laying down the groove and letting everyone else stack on top of it. while flea is just a part of a normal 4 man band and has a big part of making himself heard at the right time.

Flea isn't good. His playing style is sloppy, and he tries to make up for it with attitude. And I would hope that George Clinton has better musical judgement than me, since he's George Clinton, and I'm not. I don't care how long you've been listening to the RHCP, they just don't work for me. They're great at creating The Hook in their songs, but that hook is usually based around Keidis' voice or Flea's bassline, both of which I find to be two of the most annoying factors about their sound. *shrug*

And comparing Flea to Stefan is difficult to do, because they're two different styles. Any non bass player/musician can look at flea slap Aeroplane and then watch Stefan play the intro to Crush and think "well that's no contest, Flea's line looks a lot harder to play." Stefan is more of a composer (Dreaming Tree); Flea is more of a "how can look like 'the baddest motherfucker that ever strapped on a bass' during this song?"

They both create grooves in their songs, but Stefan's are much more conventional and representative of the typical bass role. Flea's lines are cool, but they're too "look at me!"-esque for my taste.

well ya flea's a showboat.

if you really ask me, i think both of them are losing there touch. well if you ask me rhcp as a whole are losing what i like the most about them. and hunger for the great the light is something that's turned me off about stefan, but can't stop might turn that around since it's a cool little groove.

Stefan wrote Hunger on the guitar though, and he's a bass player.
