this is what the ants mod said about it... it seems decent, but i dont think it should start when someone first joins, because weve had some noobs that sucked at first then got alright.

so maybe around 500 or so posts it kicks in.
One of the features of the software we use for our message board, vBulletin3, is a Reputation System. These types of "Karma" systems have been around for a while, and some sites, such as Slashdot have very successfully employed such a system.

While karma systems can be controversial to a community, they can also be an extremely useful tool in community-building. The basic premise of such a system is a points-system, where users can grant other users points (or take them away), and at the end of the day, the posters who contribute the most to the site are usually the ones with higher ratings, and therefore can most likely be considered to be credible when posting. The finer details of the system can be found in the Rules section.

A system of this type relies totally on its members. How this plays out is up to you. Right now, having this system enabled is 100% experimental. We have no idea if we're going to keep it around, or even if anyone will like it. However, given the recent push to keep the experience here positive, we're giving this a shot. All we ask is that you please have an open mind about this system. Try it out, read the FAQ on it, but most of all have patience, and realize that this might all go away tomorrow as well.

We've created a thread to discuss the new system. By all means please ask questions, talk about what you like about the system, what you don't like about it. Anything you can think of. Please note: we (the staff) only know so much about the system from reading about it. We'll only learn more by trying it out, so please be patient with us as we're just as new to it as you are. We'll try to answer all questions to the best of our knowledge.

Also note: we are under the impression that the system is retroactive. Meaning, since it gives out points based on posts, days registered, and the like, that users with large numbers of posts will get varying numbers of reputation-altering points, rather than everyone starting out on the same level. Apparently, this process can take some time, so if you have a ton of posts but aren't able to give someone a positive reputation rating, please be patient! Again remember, this is all new and we're learning along with you!

Most importantly, please have fun with this. This is an experimental exercise and we'll see where it goes.

Ehhh, I guess it could work but I think you should only be able to give out points and not take them away. I know there are a lot of sarcastic people on these boards (including me), and if someone misinterprets it they shouldn't be able to take away points or whatever.

If this is implemented at all (and it is something that has been discussed for quite some time), it would most likely targeted at those providing assistance in the Guitar forums, and not to gDMB or nDMB discussion.

I think it's a bad idea. People like Pezzner then wouldn't have credibility, being as he has such few posts. And I think we all know what the truth is. The same is true with CheersDtoT, who is a professional music engineer. He has few posts but is very smart in recording and sound. With the rating system, both of these guys, plus others may have very good posts disregarded because they don't have enough posts to qualify for the good karma.
