for the grey street chorus, i think he puts his thumb on low e 2nd fret for the D chord, and i dont think you have it like that.

just making sure.......oh, and great job on the site, we all really appreciate all of the hard work you've put into everything....thanks.

not to doubt anyone here, but sometimes when it looks like he is using his thumb for the low E string he is actually just muting the string, although it doesnt really matter because thats an F# which is one of the notes from the D chord

that's right. I like to hit that F# cause it leads nicely into the bass G note of the G chord. It's my preference

yea, everyone plays it differently, for example, i dont like to play the bass note on the D chord in the chorus of jimi thing because it doesnt sound as good, but on grey street it doesnt sound bad at all

Yeah....it usually sounds good for most things. But as for what Dave does, I am pretty sure he doesn't hit that F#. I say this ONLY because I don't believe he does on any other times he plays a D. If you watch video's of him playing....almost all D chords he plays....they are played just like that, with the Thumb over the top. I believe that, like DMB41ants pointed out, he is using his thumb to mute that low E as to not get the soud of an open E. Anyway....usually sound good either way. Only time I believe that he does play the F# is when he played Space Between in standard tuning on the video. Oh well...all good.......peace

Doesn't dave hit that F# note on the D chord during the Ants Marching Verse? On storytellers, it looks like he is making the point to stretch his thumb around there pretty good to hit it. maybe im wrong...the tablature book actually shows that note being hit, but i guess we know how wrong those can be sometimes

I really don't hear that F# so my guess is that he's wrapping his thumb around to mute the low E and A strings on the D chord.
