Tab for Earth Jam by Bela Fleck and The Flecktones
Tabbed from Live at the Quick
Opening section:
----4--------------------
--5---7-------4----------
---------7--5----7-------
--------------------3/5--
Play that 4 times with a pause after each. On the second and fourth times end on high A (7 on the D string). Then play the phrase with no spaces between each phrase.
At about the 2:10 mark the whole band plays that theme four times or so, then it goes into a short little breakdown at the 2:16 mark:
------------------------------------
----------------5h7---------5h7-----
------------------------------------
--0--2---4-5--------5-5-5-----------
followed by
-----4--------------------
--5----7-------4----------
----------7--5---7--------
---------------------3/5--
right into:
----------------------5h7—5------------
-------5h7-------------------7h5-------
------------------------------------7--
--5-5--------5-5-5---------------------
Then back into the main phrase once. Note that the rhythm for the 5 with the hammer to 7’s is pretty tricky, so you’ll have to listen closely to the rhythm.
After the main phrase is played once play this:
--------------------------------
--------------------------------
--------------------------------
-0--------2--------3---------5--
Then back into the main theme four times. Then this phrase really really uber fast:
-5-3-----5-3-----5-3---------------
-----5-3-----5-3----5-3------------
--------------------------5-3------
------------------------------6-3--
G minor breakdown:
----------------------------------3h5---------5-7---------7-5------
------------------------------3-5-----------8-------------------8--
--------muted slaps------------------------------------------------
--3-3--------------------3-3--------3-3------------3-3-------------
Fiddle around with that hitting two quick low G’s before playing around in the upper register mostly with flatted 7ths and 3rd’s. Then play this at the 2:57 mark
---------------------------5-7--------------------7-5-----
-----------0-2-3--5--8-----------------0-2-3-5-----8------
----0-1-3-----------------------0-1-3---------------------
-3-----------------------------3--------------------------
Then this
-3-5-7--8-10-12-11-13---19-20-22---3-5-7--8-10-12-11-13-----------------
-5-7-8-10-12-14-13-15---20-22-24 --5-7-8-10-12-14-13-15-----------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah good luck with that section. It’s the same basic G minor scale (Flatted third and flatted 7th, no flatted 6th which causes for an interesting sounding third at the 14th fret there. It is a really difficult run to pull off, but hey He’s Victor Wooten.
After that at the 3:09 mark play:
----4-------------------------
-5----7------4----2-----------
---------7-5----3-----5-------
---------------------------3--
3:12 to 3:49 marks a free Victor Wooten solo. I am not going to tab it…because I can’t. The live solo is very percussive and uses slaps and muted pops a lot. I’ll give you one commonly used fill, and try to explain the theory behind the solo:
--------------p3----p5----p7-----
---p5--p7------------------------
------------s1---s3----s5--------
-s3---s5-------------------------
The solo, like the last jam section, is also in G minor. So just get funky. Slap the low G and pop on the high G and high Bb. But keep it mostly percussive, slapping and popping muted notes. Also throw in harmonic G’s where you can.
At 3:50 he begins to play this run fast:
-------------------------------0--------------
---------0-2-3------------0-----3-0-----------
--0-1-3-----------0-1-3------------3-1--------
-3---------------3-------------------------3--
Play that three times then play this again same speed:
--------------------------------------
---------0-2-3-----------0-3-3-4-5----
--0-1-3----------0-1-3----------------
-3---------------3--------------------
Once you hit on the five at the 4:01 mark go back into the main phrase. Play that 4 times till 4:11 then play this:
---------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------2----4----5-----------
-------------------2--0--------------------------0-2-----
0----2----3----2-------3-2---0----2---3---2-----------3--
----------------------------------------------
-----2----4-----------------------------------
----------------2-3---------------------------
0----2------3---------0-------2-----3----5----
Till the 4:32 mark when you play this:
---------------------------------------
---------------------------------------
-----------3--5------------------------
-3--5--6------------3--5--6--1--3------
Fill:
----------------------------------
-----------------5--3-------------
----------3--5--------5-----------
-3--5--6------------------1-3-----
Play that phrase above phrase ten times over Bela’s solo, until 5:36 mark then play this twice:
--------------------------0--5-7------------------------0-7-5--------
----------------0--2--3---8-------------------0--2--3--------8------
------0--1--3------------------------0--1--3-------------------------
13\3-------------------------------3---------------------------------
That ends at 5:49.
And this begins, (bass part over Jeff’s Solo) make sure to hold out each note at the end of the phrase.
---4-------------------------------------
-5----7-------4--------------------------
----------7--5---7-----------------------
---------------------0-------------------
---4--------------------------
-5---7-------4----------------
--------7--5----7--3----------
------------------------------
---4---------------------------
-5---7-------4-----------------
--------7--5----7--------------
--------------------0----------
---4----------------------------
-5---7-------4------------------
--------7--5----7---------------
--------------------3-----------
---4-----------------------------
-5---7-------4-------------------
--------7--5----7----------------
---------------------1-----------
---4------------------------------
-5---7-------4--------------------
--------7--5----7-----------------
---------------------0------------
At 6:15 the style changes a little bit:
---4---------------------------------------
-5---7-------4-----------1---3---5---6-----
--------7--5----7--------------------------
-------------------------------------------
At 6:20 that main theme kicks in as Jeff grabs the two saxophones. That main theme, which I assume you would know by now, goes till 7:29 where you play this slow run:
----------------------
----------------------
----------------------
0-----2-----3-----5---
7:34 brings you this ending:
---4-----------------------------------------------------------------------
-5---7-------4-----3------3---------------------------------------4-5-7----
--------7--5-----3----5-3----5----4------4-----4--------4-5-7--------------
-----------------------------------6---8-6---8-6---8-5-7-------------------
The ending is tricky, you have to listen to the timing very closely.
