hair tie placement

i am teaching myself to play bass, and im starting to get into tapping. i notice victor wooten uses a hair tie on his neck, but im wondering does it matter where you put it? does it have to be on the actual fret board? cuz without it my strings are ringing like crazy. could just be that i suck, but is there any other way to stop the ringing? like when i tap the 15th fret on the E string, i want to only hear the G.

It's just because you suck.

The elastic is to reduce sympathetic vibration, but you'll need to rely just as much on your muting with your hands. Depending on where you're tapping, you can move the elastic up as high as you want. It'll help lower the action in addition to muting the strings, but don't come to rely too heavily on it. It'll help you build strength in your fingers if you don't have anything helping you out. Think like a piano and let the notes ring out.

yeah, I don't use a hair tie on my bass, I also don't tap much. usually chords that require all the 4 strings so I don't have to worry too much. but I suck at tapping.

yea in all the wooten vids ive seen, he mentions letting them ring to gain strength.. im doing that, it doesnt matter how hard i tap and hold tho, it still rings like a mofo. i have a squier 5 string jazz bass with active pickups if that matters. like if im using both hands to tap a G maj chord (g d a b(15 17 19 16)) how would i be able to mute anything below the 15th fret

Uhhh... if you're tapping a note on each string, then nothing else should be ringing sympathetically....?

im probably just not doing it right. plus my action is a little high in the upper frets.

It's reverse tones. It's horrible, its the pitch you're getting from the wrong side of the string essentially. I'm really not too sure what causes this problem
