My Carl Thompson Thread.

Topics about musical instruments other than guitar should go here. There's bound to be a Carter, LeRoi, or Yo-Yo Ma out there.

My Carl Thompson Thread.

Unread post by GSR » Wed Oct 26, 2005 12:44 pm

This thread is to document the process of the creation of my CT, and to keep me occupied while i wait. 8-)

So, after a long time of learning and salivating over CTs and trying to buy one on ebay to no avail, I've made acquaintances with Aaron, who runs Carl's website. He gave me Carl's phone number, said to tell him he referred me, and that Carl'd be happy to make me one.

I'm calling Carl in a few minutes. :D I am so nervous.

Nervous like a little school girl calling her crush?

"Hullo?"

"Hi, i'm looking for mr. carl thompson, i was interested in ordering a bass."

"Haha, yeah you and about 10,000 other guys. Where are you calling from?"

"Newington, it's in conneticut in the hartford area."

"Oh so you're not too far away... Can you call me back in like an hour, i've got a lot of stuff going on right now."

HOLY SHIT i felt bad for interrupting him. Anyway, i'm gonna call him back around 3...

Well, the base price for a 4 string is about $3000. The rest depends on the complexity of the project.

But the down payment is $1000, then you have 2-3 years to pay off the rest.

Yeah you're probably right Jason, I mean, he gets this kinda thing all the time.

I figure you are paying his bills... You shouldn't be concerned about bothering him.

WHOOHOO.

So i called Carl at 3 o'clock this afternoon. We talked on the phone for about 20 minutes. He talked to me about all kinds of bass talk, like woods and pickups and playing and practicing and tone. it was awesome. The idea with Carl is that it's better if you just let him know how many strings and what kind of pickup you want, and then let him have his artistic freedom and run with it. He's turned down orders of people that have plans all drawn out and have every part of the bass planned out. He's a really nice guy. I'm so psyched.

The plan now is to send him a deposit with a letter explaining what we talked about on the phone and stuff. More updates will come. :D :D :D

Arguably the best. He's the best in my opinion. To me, you really can't get a better instrument. Mike will come in here and start ranting about modulus and so forth, but modulus will be pumping out basses for a while now. Carl only has himself and a couple of other guys working on these, and the testimonials have always been phenomenal. He has a lot of famous clients, like Les, Stanley, Anthony and so forth. In my opinion, and the opinion of many others, a CT is the ultimate goal for a bass player.

Let's just say that when it's done, I probably won't need another 4 string for the rest of my life. :)

I've never played one, but they do sound great. I'm going to be honest, I can't stand the looks of the things...way too 'charlie and the chocalate factory' for me but if that's what you like, haha, go for it.

I could just never imagine spending 3 years waiting for a bass. I'm the most impatient mother fucker ever.

thats kickass man. that is actually really cool. the only thing i dont like about his basses is that swirl where the strap connects...that just gets annoying to me...but i LOVE that natural wood look, it makes it feel and look so much more natural...thats why i like warwick.
