false harmonics

Topics about musical instruments other than guitar should go here. There's bound to be a Carter, LeRoi, or Yo-Yo Ma out there.

i'm not sure if it's what u mean, but u can do some "false harmonics" hitting the strings w/ ur finger right after u hit em w/ ur pic... it's really hard to explain w/ words but it's quite simple to play

fret a fret, any fret. to make it easy, we'll start with the 14th fret on the g-string. place your thumb right in the middle of the length of the string, and pluck it with your index finger down over the pickup. so you'd have your thumb resting on the string to divide it in half, somewhere above the 24th fret, and make the 'harmonic,' and then you would pluck with your index finger to get it to ring out. it's basically like any harmonic on an open string but you're in essence moving the nut with your left hand.

do a search anywhere, i'm not good at explaining it.

listen to birdland....excellent use of false harmonics, jaco was the master

yeah ill add to what tic tacs said: your fretting hand is moving the nut (so instead of you using the whole string to make a harmonic, you are just using from that fret to the bridge). your other hand is essentially doing the actual making of the harmonic all on its own (thumb holding it down, like your fretting hand usually does; finger plucking, like it usually does). it takes practice to get them crisp, but i think you can make out a good explaination from this thread and hopefully this helps
