Help on a drum set

Topics about musical instruments other than guitar should go here. There's bound to be a Carter, LeRoi, or Yo-Yo Ma out there.

Help on a drum set

Unread post by mattinbeloit » Tue Aug 30, 2005 6:59 pm

My roommate and I both want to teach ourselves to play drums and we want to get a cheap drumset that is not electronic. The problem is that we are in a college dorm room and we don't want to make too much noise. Is there such a thing as a quiet drum set or like a really shitty set that is not really loud. We where looking at the 5 peice sets in musiciansfriend magazine and they where like around $300. any help or suggestions would be great...

Putting a drum set in a college dorm room without pissing people off or having room to move around...hmm...

They make these pads you put on the individual drums and cymbals that definitly kill the sound. If you really want to do this, they are your only option.

btw, I suggest that you do not buy a cheapo set. If one of you really get into it, that 300$ just wont cut it. Look into something that you wont have to replace.

i might be mistaken, but dont most guys learning to play drums start with just a snare drum and then gradually add things? if so, wouldnt it be best for them to start out on a pad?

Most guys (Dave Grohl, Dennis Chambers) start playing drums by just htting random shit with some sticks. If he wants to jump right into a set, no big deal. There is no "right" way to start playing drums.

they are awful, and don't have the same feel as actual drums.

yea the only electronic drums that are acceptable are the incredibly top of the line ones. the basic electronic ones just dont have anything compared to regular drums. you can notice this most with accents and stuff like that on snare and hi hats IMO

get one of those wooden boxes with the holes in it that you sit on and play with your hands, ankles and feet, like futureman has. the 'drummer' in my band here at school has one, and there are tons of awesome tones you can get out of it. real bassy for a 'bass drum' and real snappy for a 'snare-esque' sound i guess.
