slump kinda

Topics about musical instruments other than guitar should go here. There's bound to be a Carter, LeRoi, or Yo-Yo Ma out there.

slump kinda

Unread post by bassman462 » Sat Jul 30, 2005 7:53 pm

i kinda feel like blah right now with bass. just like i cant get to much better. and that i need to learn theory before going any further with bass. but everytime i try and read and learn it myself i never get it and i have to have it explained to me. does anyone know of anytype of things i should start practice to kinda set up with theory more, and will also help my technical playing.

I kinda feel the same way. My chops are all i work on, but those aren't going to help me play with other people, which I'm dying to do. Whenever i think of starting music theory it just feels so overwhelming and there's just so much information and i don't even know where to begin.

im getting timing and grooving better with playing at church alot, and me and my bro are working into making one of the extra rooms in the house into a studio, so me and him can jam which will help alot. but i just wanna get better, but i cant seem to really find what to learn. alot of vic stuff is still to complicated. and dmb stuff is kinda getting boreing. i already know almost all chili peppers. and i dont know many songs by the flecktones to try and find some to play.

a couple things i do when in a slump:

-listen to music i normally wouldn't listen to, and try to pick up what I can from that style and apply it to my own. it never hurts to be able to play everything from dmb-esque stuff, to slap, to pop, to punk, to rock, to soca, calypso, etc etc. just listen to stuff you normally wouldnt. i've taken orchestral pieces and learned some of the melodies on my bass.

-trancribe pieces from other instruments on your bass. try to learn a trumpet solo, or a drum solo via slap/pop on the bass. for example, i played crash into me on bass. even the guitar part. do that for a song. learn the guitar part up high.

-play with a pick if you usually don't, and play with your fingers if you usually play with a pick. its good to be able to do both, depending on what the song calls for. when i play with my band with a piano and drums, i have to use a pick, because i often get lost in the mix with just my fingers. the pianist loves his left hand, so i have to find a way to fit in.

-lastly, step away from the chops fests and wankeries. i dont think i've ever used anyof that stuff in a band situation, 9/10 times a band doesn't need it. its fun to show off with, but it wont help you. you need groove before you can wank. i usually just take, oh, 5 tones from a scale and use those to groove on. just playing those notes, can you make someones head bob?

-and instead of learning a song from the tabs, just find the root note of the chords/key of the song, and make up your own groove to play with.

i could go on, its just about thinking outside of what you normally do.

Are scales first on the music theory list?

ok mike what really gets me is how to do one of those cross over slides. where u slide up like a fret and roll into the next string and slide down. is that a real easy way how to explain it that will help get it down.

i work on ear stuff. listen to something and try to figure it out. hum something and play that. or just stop playing for a couple days, thatll get you in the mood. i just try not to force it. if i dont feel like it, i dont. if my fingers are sticky or too cold, i wont play, ill take a shower, hum something in the shower and when i get out, i want to try to play it. to me its about being in the mood

dude...itd take 10 years of ridiculous practice to get to flea's level. he knows soo much theory too since he plays just about every instrument. and technical ability he can be as fast as just about anyone, especially in sheer speed (in other words, not economy of motion like vic).

i just did Fur Elise by beethoven(at least the main two parts) its fun, give that a try.

is it like super super easy. my friend who is a clutz and cant even play like any crap on a guitar, she literally takes like 5 minutes to get a chord down said she could play a bit of it. ive looked at it before and got a bit bored with it. (talking about guitar)
