DOUBLE BASS Roll Call

Topics about musical instruments other than guitar should go here. There's bound to be a Carter, LeRoi, or Yo-Yo Ma out there.

DOUBLE BASS Roll Call

Unread post by MahlerGrooves » Mon Mar 21, 2005 12:35 pm

I know there are some general bass player roll calls, but I wanted to see who specifically plays DOUBLE BASS.

Please list how long you've been playing, what kind of music, and what, if any, instruments you own.

I have played classical for the past 10 years and jazz for the past 2. My instrument is a German double bass made around 1875.

indeed I am. I play about 6 hours per day, study it in school, and hope to play as my job. But I would say I am no more obsessed with DB than some people here are with guitar.

Double bassist here. Played for the past three or so years (two orchestras and one string quintet), almost started teaching and one point.

I have a student-level bass with a laminated top that is (strangely) sometimes confused with, say, a German-made instrument somewhere around 1875. :D It's a workhorse bass with sustain and tone that you'd never suspect. I set it up myself and spent almost a week getting the soundpost in just the right place - I'm proud of my piece of crap! I just can't afford anything better at this point in my life. I'll be putting a low C extension on it myself sometime soon.

I want nothing more than to play in a small jazz ensemble, but I don't have the time for it. Sadly, I don't have the time or energy to play it much anymore at all, thanks to work. One day that will definitely change.
