I have a mando, i play it all the time. When I play with a loop station, i will do like a watchtower riff on guitar (Am, G, F, G) then put that on a loop and then do the same chords on the mando and put them on the loop. It sounds real great, and its very fun to just play around with it, those things can make some neat sounds!!

they can, but I'm not very good at it...what's nice about guitar is if I can think of something to do, I can do it, whereas on mandolin I have to figure it all out little by little...I know enough theory to make it a little easier, but the scale is just bizarre for me...but it's a fun little thing...6_strings_for_life wrote:I have a mando, i play it all the time. General Stuff, might be some scales:

Also any violin music you can find will work with the mandolin, them being equivalents and all. And if you were thinking about getting any of the Nickel Creek music books (I've got both, they're worth it) keep in mind the mandolin parts aren't written tablature but with some kind of editor like power-tab and a little patience you can work them out. Or learn standard notation.

Some cool mandolin players.

I've just got one of those Fender A styles with the pickups. Be good for a starter and they're inexpensive.yknSTONE wrote:Well Violins are fretless and Mandolins arent. Seems logical.
But, would anyone in here reccomend a good Mandolin to check out?... (I was looking at the Breedlove Quartz series, any other ideas?)
I'd like to upgrade when I feel my skill level justifies it but I have a hard time finding stores that carry too many different mandolins.
Yeah thats my problem...no stores really carry alot of different kinds brands.
How much did you pay for the Fender A styles?
Im still weary about places online to buy any type of musical instrument. (I have got to play it and over look it a few times to make a choice.)

Look up, look down, look all around.
Was about 200. Definately worth it as a starter.
Sounds pretty good through an amp, but its not all that loud unplugged which is my only real complaint. I don't have much basis for comparison though. As much as the 1500 dollar Weber looks appealing, I can't justify spending more on a mandolin than i spent on the guitar I can't really justify having.
(I'm pretty leary of ordering instruments online too.)

That's a picture of my mandolin. It's acoustic-electric and I am in love with it.
I have a video of how to play Boyd's mandolin part for American Baby on my website, http://www.dmbfan.com , if you want to check it out. I already recorded how to play Two Step on mandolin, but I haven't uploaded it yet.
I think the best way to learn mandolin is learn guitar first, then buy the mandolin and a chord/scale dictionary with it. I learned to play the instrument in a single day, and I found it quite easy at that.
I'm gonna have to make you buy the cheapie that I bought. It's on sale.yknSTONE wrote:Yeah thats my problem...no stores really carry alot of different kinds brands.

That way, you may have ordered the damn thing, but you haven't blown your nut all over it.

yea I used to play mando for a little while(nickel creek made me do it too), but then I relized my hands were way to big and I typically play fingerstyle on my guitar, so flatpicking on the mando was something completely different. I'm gonna pick up a banjo soon, I think it will be more up my alley-
